MUSKY MONDAY MINUTE for AUG 31 – SEPT 6

SEPTEMBER IS HERE… LET’S GO…

Wisconsin’s muskies are just beginning that annual transition from late-summer patterns toward FALL FEEDING MODE. 🍂

Water temperatures are starting to fall across Wisconsin, and that means the fish—and their food—are beginning to move.

🎯 THIS WEEK’S MUSKY TIP: FIND THE BAIT… FIND THE MUSKY!

This time of year, look for change.

🔥 Baitfish moving onto shallow flats
🔥 Perch around w**ds
🔥 Bluegills along w**d edges
🔥 Wind-blown shorelines
🔥 Green w**ds adjacent to deep water
🔥 Points, inside turns & saddles
🔥 Shallow structure close to deeper water

When you find bait + good w**ds + a depth change…SLOW DOWN & FISH IT!

🦈 THE MUSKY LURE GAME

This is the time of year when you should have several presentations ready.

BUCKTAILS
Start moving them faster when fish are active. Don’t be afraid to burn them over the tops of w**ds.

RUBBER
Work big rubber along deeper w**d edges and over structure. Give those muskies something they can’t ignore!

CRANKBAITS
Excellent choice when fish are relating to deeper w**d edges or suspended near bait.

TOPWATER
Early morning, evening, cloudy days and windy conditions can still produce some GIANTS.

♾️ And whatever you throw…FIGURE EIGHT! ♾️

September muskies can follow a bait a long way before making their move.

🌬️ WATCH THE WIND!

This week, don’t avoid the wind.

A good wind blowing into a productive shoreline or w**d flat can push baitfish into the area—and muskies follow the groceries. WIND + WEEDS + BAIT = FISH IT! That combination can be money in September. 💰🎣

🌡️ WATCH THE WATER TEMPERATURE

Last week was a nice cool down but day time temps this week look like July. If temps 78+, please, target something other than musky.

BASS:
Look for smallmouth and largemouth around remaining green w**ds, rock and bait. Early morning and evening can still produce excellent topwater action.

WALLEYE:
Start thinking LOW LIGHT. Early morning, evening and cloudy conditions are prime times to work deeper w**d edges, rock and transition areas.

NORTHERN PIKE:
Perch and panfish around healthy w**ds can put pike right where you want them.

And if you’re chasing muskies…
PAY ATTENTION TO THOSE PANFISH!
They can tell you exactly where the predators are eating.

DON’T LEAVE FISH JUST BECAUSE YOU DIDN’T CATCH THEM.

If you see a musky…THAT’S A WIN!
Follow it.
Figure-eight it.
Change your angle.
Change your speed.
Change your lure.

Then come back later under different conditions.

The boat traffic starts thinning out.
The nights get cooler.
The w**ds change.
The bait starts moving.

Check your leaders.
Sharpen those hooks.
Fill the tackle box.
And get on the water.

MUSKY MONDAY MINUTE…THE LATE-SUMMER TRANSITION IS ON! 🔥➡️🍂

Shorter days, cooler nights, changing (dropping) water temperatures and increasing baitfish activity ! Fish on !

1️⃣ START SHALLOW — THEN MOVE DEEPER

Start your day around:
• Green w**d edges
• W**d flats adjacent to deep water
• Inside turns and points
• Wind-blown w**dlines
• Sand/w**d transitions
• Shallow structure near deeper summer holding areas

If the fish aren’t showing, gradually work deeper.

2️⃣ FOLLOW THE BAIT!

This time of year, finding the baitfish is often more important than finding the “perfect” structure.

Watch your electronics and pay attention to panfish activity, bait schools and areas where forage is being pushed against w**ds or structure. < Find the food…the muskies won’t be far away. >

3️⃣ CHANGE YOUR RETRIEVE!

🔥 Faster bucktail retrieves when fish are active. Slower blades when water is calm
🔥 Crankbaits worked over deeper w**d edges (crank, twitch, vary)
🔥 Large rubber worked along deeper transitions (and through the w**ds)
🔥 Topwater during low-light periods

And remember…FOLLOW EVERY FISH TO THE BOAT AND ALWAYS FIGURE-8!

Late-summer muskies can follow a lure a long way before committing.

🌧️ A WEATHER TIP…

If you get clouds, wind, rain or an approaching front, take advantage of it.

Changing conditions often increase musky activity and get fish moving onto w**d edges, flats and feeding areas.

When the sun comes back out? Slow down and concentrate on shade, deeper edges and cooler water.

TIP OF THE WEEK…DON’T FISH THE SAME WATER THE SAME WAY ALL DAY! If you’ve worked a w**dline with bucktails without seeing a fish CHANGE SOMETHING — Change depth, speed, direction, lure, location. One adjustment can turn a slow day into a FISH ON! 💥

MULTI-SPECIES BONUS…

Bass should continue to provide plenty of action around w**d edges, while walleye anglers should concentrate on low-light periods and deeper structure.

And…as always…when fishing during warmer conditions, keep an eye on water temperature and handle hooked fish quickly and carefully. Catch N Release with speed and care.
