The Moon Pie was invented in 1917 by Earl Mitchell, a traveling salesman for the Chattanooga Bakery in Tennessee.
Origin Story
• The Inspiration: Mitchell visited a general store in Kentucky's Appalachian region and talked with local coal miners on a break.
• The Request: He asked what kind of snack they wanted, and a miner requested something filling that could fit in a lunch pail and asked to make it "as big as the moon" while gesturing toward the sky.
• The Creation: Mitchell returned to the bakery and noticed workers warming marshmallow by the windows to dip cookies. He combined these ideas into a large, round graham cracker and marshmallow sandwich dipped in chocolate.
• Rise in Popularity
• The Working Man's Lunch: Costing just a nickel, the filling treat became very popular with miners and laborers.
• RC Cola Pairing: The snack became famously paired with an RC Cola, creating a classic Southern combination.
• Mardi Gras Tradition: In the mid-20th century, parades in Mobile, Alabama, began throwing Moon Pies instead of hard Cracker Jack boxes, cementing the treat's cultural footprint.
