The Legend of Juan Garcia and the Lock 29 Tacos
A Lock 29 Tavern Story
Every great tavern has its legends.
This one begins nearly 2,500 miles away in Reynosa, Mexico.
Juan Garcia was making the long drive north to visit his cousin in New York City. Along the way, he passed through small towns, big cities, mountains, and miles of beautiful countryside. Like most travelers, he was looking for one thing - a great place to stop and eat.
As fate would have it, a small sign pointing toward Palmyra caught his eye.
"Why not?" he thought.
A few minutes later, he pulled into Lock 29 Tavern.
The friendly bartender welcomed him with a smile and suggested he try the house tacos.
Juan raised an eyebrow.
"Tacos... in Upstate New York?"
He couldn't help but laugh.
Still, he ordered a plate of Lock Street Tacos
The first bite made him stop mid-conversation.
The second bite had him nodding in approval.
By the third taco, the bar had grown quiet as everyone watched the visitor from Mexico carefully finish every last bite.
He slowly pushed back his chair, stood up, removed his hat, and declared for everyone in the tavern to hear:
"Amigos... these are the best tacos I've had this side of the Pecos!"
The tavern erupted in applause.
Some say he asked to meet the cook.
Others swear he wanted to buy the recipe.
A few even claim he called his cousin in New York City and told him, "I'm going to be a little late... you need to come to Palmyra first!"
Whether every detail is true... well... that's for you to decide.
But one thing is certain.
The tacos at Lock 29 Tavern have been making believers out of people from all over.
So if your travels ever bring you through Palmyra...
