This coffee comes from the Muungano cooperative in the DRC, which is comprised of about 4,400 smallholder farmers in which almost half are women. In Swahili, the word “Muungano” means “Togetherness”, which is fitting as a primary focus of this co-op is gender justice. The co-op has been able to upgrade a lot of their milling equipment in the recent years, but has always produced exceptional coffee despite times when they had older equipment. They were able to build a health clinic for their members using fair trade funds in 2021, with a vision to expand and develop that program even more as the years progress.
In January 2023, Muungano purchased a small dry mill in Goma from a USADP grant. This will allow them to not only process this year’s coffee at the mill, but also offer milling services to other coffee cooperatives who lack their own dry mill. They are able to run their dry mill operation using solar energy, lowering their carbon footprint and the expense of a gas-powered generator.
This is the second time we’ve offered this coffee, and we’re very excited to have it back. This coffee is sweet, bright, and complex. With a medium body, it has notes of nutmeg, lemon and pecan. A light earthiness balances the brighter notes, making for a great cup.
