Subject: Update and Future Plans
Dear Lagerhausers,
This autumn marks two years since we closed Lagerhaus Brewery. Although I initially intended to find a new location and reopen, my academic pursuits have taken precedence. Completing my Ph.D. has led me to academic work at my university and coaching foreign Ph.D. students at Boston University on their presentation skills.
I will also teach for Hillsborough County Public Schools in the new school year.
As I reflect on the past 30 years in the brewery restaurant business, I have decided that the stress and demands of the business no longer align with my current aspirations. Instead, I might consider a project where I can share Lagerhaus beer recipes and key Austrian dishes. However, I will not be actively running the business, allowing me to focus on my academic pursuits.
Thank you for your support and for being great Lagerhausers.
Warm regards,
Franz

ABSTRACT

This dissertation delves into the interplay between culture, organizational psychology, and Human Resource Management (HRM) within the context of global businesses. It systematically explores the impact of cultural factors, such as individualism/collectivism, power distance, and uncertainty avoidance, on various facets of HRM practices. Additionally, it investigates the profound influence of psychological processes, including motivation, job satisfaction, and emotional intelligence, on HR strategies and employee outcomes. The study underscores the significance of cultural sensitivity in HRM practices, emphasizing the need for organizations to tailor their recruitment, selection, training, and motivation strategies to accommodate diverse cultural preferences and beliefs. Furthermore, it highlights the pivotal role of organizational psychology in shaping HR outcomes and the importance of emotional intelligence in effective leadership. In the contemporary globalized workplace, embracing diversity is recognized as a catalyst for innovation and organizational success. Endeavors, such as exploring cross-cultural leadership styles, investigating the increasing role
of AI in the hiring process, assessing the effectiveness of cultural intelligence training programs,
investigating the link between the corporate environment and employee well-being, and studying the impact of technology and remote work on HRM practices. Ultimately, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how culture and psychology shape HRM strategies, offering guidance to HR professionals and organizations seeking to navigate the complexities
of a diverse and globalized workforce.

A reflective Essay.

A month has passed since I earned my Doctor of Philosophy title. It's remarkable how things have shifted. The endless 14-hour research days are behind me now. The most profound change? It's the way I perceive everything around me.

Take, for instance, "simple" customer service calls for a prescription renewal. Previously a mundane task, it now unfolds as an intriguing study in human behavior and communication, a subtle dance of words under the constraints of corporate policies. (7h30 in 16 calls 13 days and not refilled yet😁, borowing statins from moms cabinet.)

My academic interests have also evolved. I've found myself increasingly drawn to the depths of Roman law and history. Eagerly, I dove into a book on philosophy during the late Roman Republic. However, this confidence was quickly tempered by the realization of my limited grasp of classical philosophy. Delving into the complexities of Lucretius and Cato's Stoicism was a reminder of the gaps in my knowledge, especially my lack of ancient Greek.

Fortunately, a friend introduced me to the works of Ludwig Wittgenstein, presented in both German and English. This has been a pleasure. Wittgenstein's focus on the precise use of language and the meaning behind words resonates more closely with the themes of my dissertation.

This journey, still in its early stages, has already reshaped my approach to learning and understanding. As a Doctor of Philosophy, I'm learning every day, seeing the world through a different lens, and eagerly anticipating the new insights each day brings.

Amun!

Dear Lagerhausers,
From time to time, many of you have asked if I have already found another location for Lagerhaus Brewery & Grill. I did not want to tell anyone my focus was somewhere else until I successfully finished🤓. One of the few good things out of Covid was the push to restart my academia.
I can now proudly announce that I have graduated "Summa Cum Laude" to Philosophiae Doctor with the dissertation "Culture and Psychology in Global Human Resource Management."
Yours truly
Franz
