Sometimes emotions take over when you least expect them. That happened to us today.
As many of you know, we've been building Darlene's as we go. We've grown slowly, and every dollar we make gets invested right back into our future here. We don't take vacations, buy new toys, or chase the latest clothing trends. We build our business instead.
Along the way, we've been incredibly fortunate to have an amazing circle of friends who have catapulted us far beyond anything we ever imagined possible. Today was another one of those moments.
Over the past 11 months, our dear friend Danny has built every piece of wooden furniture and every wood fixture in our sandwich shop. Not all at once, but piece by piece. Whenever he had the time, using all different kinds of wood. Each piece is unique, with its own story to tell.
They're the stories we love sharing when someone compliments our bar, our countertop, the little stereo shelf, or the handmade solid wood tables in our dining room. These aren't just pieces of furniture to us. They're reminders of the people who believed in us. It’s pretty powerful stuff.
If you came to visit us when we first opened, you'll remember the little folding card tables covered with tablecloths. We were putting all our faith in the food and that people would come back regardless of what the tables looked like. Then friends started donating eclectic tables, mismatched chairs, and patio furniture. We have been so unbelievably lucky to have all of you rally behind us, allowing us to put everything we earn back into our kitchen, our food, and our edible garden.
Today, Danny completed our little indoor dining room with the final two handmade tables. One seats four comfortably (or six if everyone likes each other lol), and the other is a cozy two-top that now sits by the front window. The wood ranges from cypress to pecan, but Danny's craftsmanship. The matching edges, grooves, and attention to detail, it ties the entire room together beautifully.
I never would have imagined we'd be this far in such a short amount of time. It has only been possible because of friends like Danny, who have so generously shared their time, talent, and hearts with us. And because of every single person who chooses to walk through our doors, eat REAL food, drop off flowers, seeds, letters, share homegrown vegetables, or simply cheer us on.
If you've read this far, thank you for that too, lol.
We're just so grateful to be accepted for exactly who we are: two food nerds who are constantly wanting to learn, and grow with what we do. We want our food to be an experience for the pallet. We believe that can even happen in a sandwich.
Thank you to everyone who has helped keep this passion project moving forward. We truly couldn't do it without you.
✌️ & ❤️,
The Darlene's Team
