Let's ring in the New Year with a delightful dish using Nonna's marinara sauce! How about making a Classic Italian Lasagna? It's hearty, comforting, and perfect for a celebratory meal. Here's a recipe for you:
Classic Italian Lasagna with Nonna's Marinara Sauce
Ingredients:
1 lb (450g) ground beef or Italian sausage
1 onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups Nonna's marinara sauce (or your favorite marinara sauce)
1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 cup water
1 tbsp dried basil
1 tbsp dried oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
12 lasagna noodles, cooked according to package instructions
2 cups ricotta cheese
1 egg
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Meat Sauce:
In a large skillet or pot, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage over medium heat until browned.
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent.
Stir in Nonna's marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and water. Mix well.
Add the dried basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce on low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Prepare the Ricotta Mixture:
In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and set aside.
Assemble the Lasagna:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Place a layer of cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce.
Spread a layer of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese.
Repeat the layers (meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella) until you run out, finishing with a generous layer of meat sauce and mozzarella on top.
Bake the Lasagna:
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent the cheese from burning) and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve and Enjoy:
Let the lasagna cool for about 10 minutes before cutting into it. This helps it set and makes it easier to serve.
Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
Buon appetito and happy New Year! 🎉
