On the heels of announcing our 4th consecutive win of Maine’s Best Burger, I am here to make a sad, but equally hopeful announcement I never thought that I would be making.
At the end of this season, I plan to pass the torch of ownership of the Owls Head General Store on to another.
This was not an easy decision in any way, shape or form.
The store was essentially my first baby. It required every ounce of my attention, needed constant energy, and gave me a run for my money wherever sleep and rest were concerned. But watching it grow and become more and more independent each day it existed was so beautiful and always the best part of my day.
Then my real first baby came along 🖤 …
All of a sudden, those same feelings I had about the store were also being felt at home and it was like they were constantly battling for my attention *and my sleep schedule*.
…And the ugly decision I needed to make started creeping out from behind the backdrop of my silent moments.
After a year of constantly bartering with myself, frustration with my own abilities for not being able to “keep up”, and hours spent crying over my staff and my family and the community - the one thing that had tipped the pros & cons scale was obvious … and scream-babbling about firetrucks and motorcycles in the next room.
I feel very sad that Theo will not grow up with “the family store” the way I always imagined that he would; but I feel very happy that the ones who decide to take the torch from me might have that opportunity for themselves. This is the best place for it. That’s why I did what I did.
I was also able to make the community of Owls Head my family’s home as it was many, many years ago; and I feel very honored to have created the reason for that, and very excited for the opportunity to indulge in the ideas of whoever comes next.
I am beginning to shake off some of the grief I’ve been feeling about having to end this chapter of my life, and am starting to see little cracks of light in that backdrop of my silent moments finally. They take the shape of - family trips on holidays and maybe even some lake swimming next summer.
This little store by the sea has had only love & devotion poured into it for the past 6 years; literally and figuratively. By myself, my family, my staff, and the countless visitors and locals that make it a part of their lives every day. And I know that it will be the bright light on someone else’s horizon, just like it was for me. ✨🦉
As I said, our plan is to continue on until the end of 2026, so there is still lots of time to come visit!
