This Women’s History Month, Polaris is conducting an awareness campaign aimed at educating supporters on the role of gender in human trafficking. We hope to educate the public on the different ways gender and trafficking intersect.

I cannot believe out of the hundreds if not thousands of women that applied, I was chosen. I am honored and privileged and grateful for the opportunity to continue to work with Polaris, and be a part of all the amazing campaigns that they do, and continue to educate and raise awareness about human trafficking, but specifically during this month, where we celebrate, amazing, brilliant, talented, and strong women, I am ecstatic to be a part of this. Thank you all of my supporters and to my mentors and a big shout out to Rachel Lloyd who taught me that my story is valuable, and that I shouldn’t be exploited anymore. In most human trafficking situations, there are no visible “signs” or “indicators” that trafficking is happening - unless you know something else about the situation - unless you know the story. Without knowing the story, “signs” of human trafficking can lead to judgments formulated from unconscious bias or harmful stereotypes. They can also lead to situations where a person being trafficked is actually put in a dangerous position by a well-meaning stranger. Learn more about the real story of human trafficking.

Movies and television often show human trafficking as beginning with kidnapping by a stranger. In reality, people in s*x trafficking situations almost always know and even trust or love their traffickers. In fact, according to our 2020 data from the National Human Trafficking Hotline, in situations where we knew how the trafficking began, 42% of s*x trafficking victims were recruited by a family member and 39% were recruited by an intimate partner or marriage proposition. to learn the real story about human trafficking. People in trafficking situations are rarely physically held against their will. Rather, they have been so expertly manipulated and “groomed” that they believe they are making their own choices or feel that they don’t have the option to leave the situation. This psychological manipulation is the most common, and most powerful, weapon of s*x trafficking.
