Ohiopyle’s name is tied to the river. DCNR traces it to Indigenous words believed to mean “white, frothy water,” a description that makes sense when you watch the Yough pour over the falls.

The name holds a piece of the area’s history in plain sight. Next time you’re at the overlook, take a moment to watch the water that gave this place its name.

Fall color around Ohiopyle can change between the river and the ridges above town. The higher ground generally turns before the valleys, and different tree species add their colors at different times.

On your next fall visit, compare the woods beside the Yough with the slopes above it. You may catch several stages of autumn in the same view.

Kentuck K**b’s story includes a familiar western Pennsylvania name: Hagan Ice Cream. I.N. and Bernardine Hagan commissioned the Frank Lloyd Wright home after visits to their friends’ home at Fallingwater inspired them.

A yellow autumn leaf has been carrying that color all summer. Green chlorophyll usually hides the yellow and orange pigments; as it breaks down in fall, those colors become easier to see.

Ohiopyle is the southern end of a trail that keeps going for 70 miles. The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail follows the mountains toward the Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown, with yellow blazes marking the way.

The Ohiopyle section is steep and rocky, so give a day hike plenty of time. Autumn adds another reason to look up between the climbs!

The Yough does something that surprises a lot of first-time visitors: it flows north. North-flowing rivers are less common, though the explanation is simple: rivers follow the downhill shape of the land.

The Yough has some famous company. The Nile, Florida’s St. Johns, and the Red River of the North all flow north too.
