52 degrees, all summer long.

That’s the temperature inside Laurel Caverns, Pennsylvania’s largest cave system, with more than four miles of passages beneath the Laurel Highlands. A light jacket belongs in the car for this one, even in August.

Stewart on the Green has swings, two play structures, a basketball court, and a gazebo. It sits right in the borough and fits easily into an Ohiopyle day.

It works for a picnic, a little play time, or an hour with no agenda at all.

A muddy puddle can quietly turn a narrow trail into a wide scar. Every detour presses down another strip of plants at the edge, and the damage lasts long after the mud dries.

Walking straight through keeps the impact in one place. A few muddy steps help protect the living edge of the trail and keep the path in better shape for everyone who follows.

Baughman Rock sits above the deepest part of Pennsylvania’s Youghiogheny River Gorge. The 3.4-mile Baughman Trail is rated most difficult, with steep, rocky terrain throughout.

Plan on a demanding hike and give yourself time at the overlook.

Cucumber Falls begins before the waterfall comes into view. On the short walk through mature hemlocks, the sound builds through the ravine and turns the 0.4-mile out-and-back trail into part of the experience.

Natural rock gives the trail a more difficult rating, and high water can flood the riverside section. Check park alerts before leaving town, then take your time on the approach and let that first glimpse of the falls feel earned.

A few river miles can completely change the kind of day you have on the Yough. The Middle runs Class I and II rapids from Ramcat Put-in toward Ohiopyle, giving beginning whitewater kayakers and experienced canoeists a gentler introduction.

The Lower starts below Ohiopyle Falls and runs seven miles through Class III and IV rapids, with difficulty changing by water level. PFDs are required throughout the river, and helmets are required on the Lower.
