The Cedar Island route was beautiful today. It felt 100% like the beginning of fall out there. 🍂

As more folks start making their way in, just a little island PSA: if you see standing water, it’s sound water. And salt water is NOT your vehicle’s friend. 😬

Creep through the deeper spots when you can. It’s also a nice little piece of island courtesy to let folks coming the other way use the highest ground and take turns through the spots where the middle is driest.

No one needs people plowing through like they’re driving a jet ski and sending wakes into people’s yards, houses, golf carts, etc. 😂

And this isn’t just about being courteous — it’s safer, too. Flooded golf carts and lithium batteries can create a serious fire hazard.

If you don’t have boots yet, now is your moment. Tradewinds or The Variety Store can hook you up, and once you’ve got a pair, you’ll be unstoppable. 😎🥾

Super thankful for the DOT and Ferry workers , they’re working really hard to keep people moving.

❤️Incredibly grateful the emergency ferry up North is able to help the folks in the Hatteras area and up…

They’re doing a great job in a pretty chaotic situation, so a little patience and kindness goes a long way.

Ferry food makes the wait a little easier. ❤️

Hi friends! Good news — we’re open!

The water is still deep in some spots, but the worst is definitely behind us. Our side of the highway is being cleared, and southbound ferries are running to Swan Quarter and Cedar Island. They’ve added extra routes and have stacked standby in a way that seems to make sense.

Ferry personnel are working hard through the controlled chaos, and my hope is they’re able to get enough people off the island that once the Hatteras ferries start running, there won’t be a huge mess waiting for them.

If you’re trying to get on or off the island, keep an eye on ncferry.org. They’ve posted the current schedule. And don’t get discouraged by the lack of reservations — I’m guessing most of those ferries are going to be overbooked anyway.

Trust me, everyone is working hard to keep things moving and get us all back to normal.

Meanwhile, it’s an absolutely beautiful day here on the island, so it could always be much, much worse. 🌊☀️

*Almost high tide here and no real surprises thankfully.

Fingers crossed that HWY 12 on the North end , holds up better than it has on Pea Island. 🤞🏾

We will keep everyone posted when things go back to the normally scheduled programming . ❤️

We wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all the concerned calls and emails. We appreciate all the love.

Yes, we’re having a bit of a blow.
Yes, there is some road damage north of us.
Yes, there’s some flooding on the island ~ the usual spots, nothing out of the ordinary.

And, now is a good time to remind you that we have several webcams so you can see what’s happening in the village, in real time.

Overcast and windy, but still beautiful Ocracoke.

And the shells are going to be amazing once this is past us… just FYI.
