For more than 30 years, Ricardo has carried forward the tradition of oak wood roasting that our founder, Carlo Di Ruocco, learned as a coffee apprentice in Salerno, Italy.   While the coffee industry has changed over the years, our approach at Mr. Espresso has remained largely the same: We roast slowly over locally sourced oak wood, allowing our coffee to develop the sweetness, body, and smooth finish that have long defined our style.

Today we celebrate the person responsible for Mr. Espresso’s signature flavor: John Di Ruocco, our VP of Coffee. 🎂

has spent over 25 years shaping our Oakland roastery through international sourcing trips, blend development, roast refinement, and building producer relationships over time. While he learned the craft from his father, Carlo, he has made Mr. Espresso his own with every batch he and his team roast.

There really is no algorithm for what John does, just decades of refining his expertise through the many beans that have entered our roastery doors.

When Carlo Di Ruocco emigrated from Salerno, Italy, to the San Francisco Bay Area, he brought with him a very specific idea of what an espresso should taste like. Beginning in 1978, he built a business around that vision. He started as an espresso machine distributor and repairman, but—still unsatisfied with the espresso he was finding—he eventually began roasting his own beans the traditional Italian way.

Nearly five decades later, Mr. Espresso is still roasting its signature Italian-style espresso along with contemporary coffee blends and sustainably sourced single-origin coffees, all over oak wood. Today, you can find Mr. Espresso coffees served at cafes, restaurants, bakeries, and hotels around the U.S.

Happy Mother’s Day to Marie Francoise Di Ruocco, our Mrs. Espresso, CFO, and the heart of this roastery for nearly fifty years. ❤️

She and Carlo built Mr. Espresso together, starting from a family garage in the East Bay. In those early years, she did it all, from managing business finances, packing coffee, running deliveries, and raising a family at the same time. Her dedication to this business and the people it serves has never wavered. Today she continues as our CFO, and can still be found stepping in to assist customers from time to time.

We are grateful for her every single day. Happy Mother’s Day, Marie. 💐

👋 Say hello to the newest single-origin coffee: D.R. Congo, Washed Process!

This coffee comes from the #1 “Best of Congo” lot at the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 2025 auction. Roasted light, the brew has notes of crisp mandarin, hibiscus, and dark plum, balanced by a smooth, syrupy mouthfeel.

Grown in Minova, South Kivu, the coffee is produced by MAJIRANE COFFEE / COOP-CA, a cooperative founded in 2020 by six women from Kalehe Territory. Their work focuses on strengthening the local community through coffee production that supports fair pay, improved quality, and opportunities for farmers in the region.

We’re honored to welcome this exceptional coffee to our Collezione di Caffè and look forward to hearing what you think!

Expect a bold, full-bodied shot with an especially creamy texture and notes of cream, Brazil nut, nutmeg, and pear brandy.

For the past month, we’ve been serving these beans exclusively at The Caffè by Mr. Espresso, and after seeing how much people have been enjoying them, we’re now making the beans available for you to brew at home. ☕️

More about Espresso Futurista: Robusta has long played a supporting role in classic Italian espresso, but it doesn’t usually take the lead. We decided to make this blend after sourcing exceptional coffee from Java and wanting to show what it’s capable of. Over half of this unconventional blend is a fruity Java natural robusta, balanced by a chocolatey washed Guatemala.

The result isn’t what you’d find at your typical American café, and it’s not quite what you’d find in Italy either. It’s something that’s between tradition and new wave.

It’s roasted right here in Oakland by us Mr. Espresso | Coffee & Machines, and we’re excited for you to try it. Brewing at The Caffè and ready to order at the link in our bio.
