Executive Chef Reign Free has been in the kitchen since she was nine, seated on a stool beside her mother cooking traditional West Indian dishes for her family. College took her from the Midwest to New Orleans’ Dillard University were she earned a degree in public health. As an Executive Chef her Caribbean roots join Creole, Pan-Asian menus and the best comfort food this side of your grandmother’s

dining room table. As an entrepreneur and a graduate of The Women’s Initiative microenterprise program, Chef Reign continues to push the envelope of customer service, community consciousness and innovative cuisine. Her latest dining experience, 530: Casual. Clandestine. is a private supper club that extends The Red Door brand and further establishes her as one of the Bay area’s raising chefs. She is joined in this work by her husband Darryl and son Darren.

Tomorrow, we celebrate Twenty. ♥️

Twenty years of opening doors, setting tables, building relationships, creating opportunities, and doing what we’ve always loved most — taking care of people.

This countdown has given us a chance to look back at where we started, the people who helped us grow, and the moments that shaped The Red Door along the way.

Thank you for rocking with us these past 20 days as we opened the archives, shared the stories, and took you along for the journey. It’s been pretty special getting to tell this story with you.

Tomorrow, we get to celebrate it all.
And then? We keep going.

Twenty years of showing up, working hard, and creating unforgettable experiences for everyone else — sometimes, you have to make a few memories of your own. ♥️

So I took 24 hours, headed to Vegas, and celebrated the people who help make The Red Door what it is.

A little speed. A great dinner. A lot of laughs. And some very well-deserved time together outside of work.

Because after twenty years, one thing is certain: the people behind The Red Door are just as special as the experiences we create.

Twenty years of The Red Door has also meant twenty years of creating alongside some incredibly talented people.

Planners, designers, florists, venues, photographers, producers, rental partners, fellow creatives, and so many others who have brought their talent to the table alongside ours.

Some collaborations lasted a night. Others turned into years of working, creating, and growing together. Every one of them has played a part in the Red Door story.

Soul of Spring 🌷 is one of those for us.

Our partnership with Alameda Health System Foundation has given us the opportunity to bring hospitality, culinary artistry, and celebration together in support of something much bigger: advancing access to quality healthcare throughout our community.

For us, being rooted in Oakland has always meant giving back to the community that has given so much to us.

Throughout the years, that has taken many forms — raising funds for local youth organizations, preparing meals for neighbors in need, supporting nonprofits, and creating opportunities for the next generation of culinary entrepreneurs through The Culinary Collective.

Because success has never just been about how much we can grow. It’s also about what we can pour back into the community as we do.

In April 2021, we had the honor of welcoming then–Vice President Kamala Harris to The Red Door in West Oakland during her first visit home to Oakland after taking office.

Our kitchen became a space for a conversation bigger than us — bringing together small business owners and community leaders to talk about access to capital, the realities of entrepreneurship, and the resources that help businesses like ours not only survive, but grow.

For a company that started in an apartment kitchen 15 years earlier, it was one of those moments that made us stop and take in just how far this journey had taken us.

Over 20 years, our work has taken us into some pretty incredible rooms.

We’ve had the privilege of creating for intimate gatherings, major moments, meaningful causes, and tables filled with people doing extraordinary things.

But no matter the guest list or the occasion, our approach has always been the same: show up with intention, lead with hospitality, and make every experience feel worthy of the moment. ♥️

In 2017, we moved into our West Oakland kitchen with an empty space and a vision for what it could become.

Nearly a decade later, these walls have seen countless menus come to life, events come together, ideas become reality, and a team continue to grow.

In July 2006, The Red Door began in Reign’s apartment. From an Emeryville co-op kitchen to our first private kitchen in Oakland, our home in West Oakland, and eventually the opening of TWO and the launch of Craft Maker — each chapter has built upon the one before it.

Twenty years later, we’re looking back at the spaces, milestones, and growth that shaped The Red Door into what it is today. ♥️
