Taiwan Bento BENTO | BAO | BOBA

Though TB is not serving food, I would like to share some of my journey!

I came to the US for school in 2012. Inspired by seeing the culture of people pursuing their dreams, while classmates were applying for stable jobs, I chose to start a Taiwanese restaurant, because I love feeding people and love my home country, Taiwan!

Without any experience, I was lucky to meet Sophina Uong, the executive chef at the time at Pican, who gave me many invaluable pieces of advice. In 2014, I started Taiwan Bento at the heart of Oakland, which I now deem home.

I really appreciate those who have supported TB all these years. TB started as a very unpolished restaurant, but Oakland and the community embraced me no matter what and accompanied me to grow. Later I realized that even if I’m not great or perfect, many Asian diaspora are looking for a taste of home. My BNS, braised pork rice, guabao, popcorn chicken… provided them with profound memories with their family or Taiwan.

As I feel so lucky to have received help from all around, I always try to do the same the best I can. I tried to support others and have become forever friends with some. When the Asian hate crimes surged, I was thrilled that some small businesses were joining me to raise funds and the community support was strong. I could never have imagined that I, as an introvert immigrant who is usually nervous talking to people, was able to pull this together and help others with my food. This is my American dream!

My goal was to introduce Taiwan through food and make it accessible to everyone. Food is also an identity, I’m grateful my new home learns to know and accepts who I am!

Last year, I lost one dear family member. This year, Russia invaded Ukraine, which reminded me of my biggest fear that Taiwan may be forcibly taken one day and nothing is impossible. All these made me rethink my priorities. W***y’s grandma was from Suzhou China, went to Taiwan on a college trip, and ended up never being able to go back because the war broke out.

I don’t know my next step yet. I’m so touched by all the heartwarming messages. With your love and support, hope TB is not an end and I will put my updates here. Thank you! 🙏

Dear Luke,

This article made us overwhelmed with emotion for someone to understand our struggles so meaningfully. Luke, we’ll never forget how you covered us from the very beginning in 2014. You were the first journalist to pick up our story and you continued to follow us even as you transitioned organizations. We always appreciated your professional care and your profound understanding of the locale, the food, the culture, and us. You helped us reach a broader audience than we could have on our own.

Thank you for doing what you do for Taiwanese cuisine,

Stacy & W***y

Hello Bento Fam,

There is some big news I’d like to share with you: July 29th will be the last day of Taiwan Bento.

It’s a very difficult decision for us as Taiwan Bento has been our baby all these years. It started as a little dream and passion to share Stacy's homeland food. Throughout these years, we appreciate having all the support to help us grow, meeting people who then became forever friends, and building a team that we sincerely care about each other. We know that there are also many people out there, who we haven’t had the chance to meet but have been consistently supporting us and introducing us to their family and friends. Thank you to all of you who will forever be a part of Taiwan Bento’s memory.

We are also especially humbled and grateful to the strong community support that helped Taiwan Bento all these years, but there have been many challenges in this industry, as well as hurt by a community member that we had devoted efforts and heart. Most importantly, during the pandemic, Stacy lost a dear family member, which makes us realize that time with family is most precious.

It's a bittersweet moment for us. Ultimately, we feel blessed in so many ways these past 8 years. We will post more about our journey later, but for now we are still operating the next 2 weeks and we'd love to see you before this chapter closes.

Did you know that our Zha Jiang Mian is made with fresh noodles, spicy wok-fried sauce of ground pork, bean curd, soy bean kernels + and fresh veggies?! It’s so much fun to mix all the ingredients together and biting into the QQ noodles along with the crunch of the fresh veggies 🤤
