🫘 Did You Know? Coffee Beans Aren’t Actually Beans ☕👀

What we call “coffee beans” are actually the seeds found inside the fruit of the coffee plant, known as coffee cherries.

Each cherry typically contains two seeds nestled inside layers of fruit. After harvesting, the fruit is removed and the seeds are processed, dried, roasted, and eventually brewed into coffee.

So why are they called beans instead of seeds?

Historians believe the term “bean” became popular because the dried seeds resemble familiar legumes in shape and appearance. Early coffee trade language and global commerce also helped the nickname stick over time.

Before roasting, coffee seeds are green with a grassy, earthy aroma. Roasting transforms them through heat and chemistry, unlocking the rich flavors, aromas, and tasting notes found in your cup.
