We moved to Waterford on a snowy day in April of 2021. We were completely new to Western Maine, and didn’t really know anyone. We happened to return our U-Haul to Steve's General Store & Classic Catering the next morning. When we walked in we knew we were staying for breakfast, but we didn’t know how important that decision would be.
The cast of local characters at the counter and booths turned to look at us strangers as if a record had scratched, but we didn’t feel unwelcome. We sat ourselves down at the orange counter, worn from nearly 40 years of patrons’ elbows, and listened to Steve holding court with his faithful regulars. Carrie poured us hot coffee with a smile, and Miguel made us the best corned beef hash and eggs, which we would return for every week for the next 5 years.
Steve’s store was a special place. A local institution, unchanged from its inception, whose quiet continuity was a source of comfort and nostalgia. It was a place to get a great meal at an unimaginably affordable price, a place to gather and socialize, get the local news, and connect with others. The Graivers were the first to welcome us to our new home, and their friendship has been one of our greatest blessings. They helped us find our footing when opening our hot dog cart, and then again when we opened The Loon. We’ve worked together, socialized together, and supported each other in many ways. Their kids work with us at the restaurant, and the whole family shows up for Thursday night dinner, and a chocolate ice cream cone with jimmies for Steve. We wouldn’t be where we are without them.
Their store is where we first met so many people who are now part of our lives, and we know everyone who made it part of their routine feels the same void we do. We want to congratulate Steve and the Graiver/Hart/Marr family for nearly 40 years of good business, and thank them for the positive impact they’ve had on our lives and our community. Steve’s store will be greatly missed, but the people who made it special are still around, and will always have our friendship, love, and support. 🧡
