Meet Monica!
Monica is part of our barista team and is our social media person (a.k.a she’s the one typing this in third person)! Monica has lived most of her life between São Paulo, Brazil and Longmeadow, Massachusetts. She joined our team in the Fall of 2022 when she came to study at Smith, making her our second longest-standing employee.

Here are a few fun facts about Monica:

What's your favorite hobby?
I really like pottery, crochet and crosswords!

What is your favorite thing about working at Ana Bandeira?
Our team is my favorite thing about working at Ana. I really appreciate the culture we’ve built and the support we have for one another. Also, having been here for such a long time, it’s been a gift to witness the growth of Ana Bandeira Northampton.

What is your favorite thing on our menu?
Well, I have a serious case of sweet-toothness, which means working at a chocolate-cafe is a great perk. My favorite thing on our menu is definitely the pot-de-creme — it’s very chocolaty, smooth and velvety.

Do you have any pets?
⁠⁠Yes! I have a cat named Lola – her full government name is Lola Palola Tuna Patez de Souza. She has thumbs and enjoys chewing on political science books (she’s trying to acquire knowledge for total world domination).

What's your favorite hobby?
I like sculpting, Movies, and making music with my friends

What is your favorite thing about working at Ana Bandeira?
The people for sure. We’ve got some really fun personalities in this place and it makes for a very pleasant work environment.

What is your favorite thing on our menu?
I like the tomato soup. It’s creamy and delicious, made fresh in-house by yours truly, and goes great with my patent-pending psycho grilled cheese (not on the menu, sorry :( )

Do you have any pets?
⁠⁠Not anymore, used to have a gerbil named Tomata Duplenty, R.I.P.

Congratulations to all the graduates of 2026! To the Smith College Class of 2026, we extend a special thank you. Ana Bandeira arrived in Northampton in 2022, alongside many of you. We recognize that we would not be the business we are today without your continued support.

What Makes Ana Bandeira Chocolate So Special?

Our chocolate starts at our fourth-generation farm in Espírito Santo, Brazil, on cacao trees planted in a native old-growth forest. Once the cacao fruit is ripe, it is carefully selected for the best quality. The selected cacao is then fermented in wooden crates, combining modern controls with traditional techniques. It is then sun-dried for seven days, allowing the flavors to further develop.
We then manually roast the cacao lightly at lower temperatures to accentuate its distinct single-origin characteristics. Afterwards, we separate the cacao from the husks using an airflow-controlled winnowing process, resulting in quality cocoa nibs. The cocoa nibs are then ground and mixed with carefully selected ingredients, creating smooth and silky chocolate. The mixture is then tempered through a process of heating and cooling, giving the chocolate its famous snap, shine, and melting point. Finally, the chocolate is molded into bars and packaged in our in-house designed packaging.

In short, what makes Ana Bandeira Chocolate so special is that we have spent generations caring for cacao, and now we use modern techniques to make internationally-awarded chocolate, from beginning to end.

Meet Shane!
Officially, Shane was hired as our Support and Maintenance person, but he's actually our under-cover superhero when anything in the café goes down.
Shane is originally from Ludlow and joined our team in Fall of 2024. Since then, he’s been a key part of our café’s success.

Here are a few fun facts about Shane:

What's your favorite hobby?
I enjoy being outdoors hiking, kayaking, etc.

What is your favorite thing about working at Ana Bandeira?
My favorite thing about working at Ana Bandeira is how hands-on we are as a small business, and how everything is made from scratch. It really gives an extra sense of pride watching everything come together. Plus, I’ve learned so much!

What is your favorite thing on our menu?
I really enjoy the poçoca filling in our bon bons but as far as a menu item I would have to say our butternut squash soup.

Do you have any pets?
I have 2 cats(Snickers & Riley) and 5 goldfish!
