To Our Spirals Family,
Thank you for your patience over the past few weeks. We know there have been questions, and because you’ve supported us so generously from the very beginning, we wanted to share a heartfelt update.
After a great deal of careful consideration, family meetings, and prayer, we have made the difficult decision to close Spirals (as we know it now) permanently. This wasn’t a decision made lightly and it certainly is not the goodbye we feel you deserve.
A few weeks ago, we experienced a small fire in the restaurant. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the damage was limited. Still, it was a moment that made us pause. The incident brought to light some health challenges Scott has been facing since his stroke that have, at times, affected daily routines in ways that are hard to see from the outside. More than anything, we’re choosing to focus on what matters most: health, rest, and family.
While this moment has brought grief and uncertainty, it’s also brought gratitude. Because Spirals has been so much more than a restaurant. It was where Justin nearly got himself disowned for putting a peanut butter and jelly with bacon dog on the official printed menu (the PB&Justin was never supposed to happen…) It was where Scott walked us all through the menu our first time. It was also where we celebrated 1st and 90th birthdays. It’s where we hosted wedding showers for Nickalicious and Unbayleevable, where Accountant Aly’s gender reveal made us all cry, and where families we didn’t know became ones we can’t imagine life without.
We’ve celebrated engagements & weddings, mourned losses, watched babies grow up before our eyes, reunited with family and welcomed new life with moms who practically lived off Spirals through their pregnancies. We’ve laughed until we cried, and cried until we laughed. From TikTok chaos to a viral post from Nick Chappell, from being featured by Lester Holt, to flannel shirt days and a full-blown PBS special we’ve lived a whole lifetime in this little place. And the truth is: it’s hard to let it go, even temporarily. It’s gutting. But it’s also beautiful. We got to live all of this together.
While we don’t yet know what the next chapter looks like, Scott is already dreaming up what Spirals could become in the future. Most likely a food truck when the time is right. Until then, Scott is pressing pause so we can take a breath and care for one another well.
Thank you for your kindness, your encouragement, and the way you’ve shown up for us over these last five years. We ask for continued grace as our family steps back and navigates this season quietly and together. This isn’t goodbye forever. It’s simply “see you later.”
With love and gratitude,
Scott, Cristal, and the Fam
