Over the last couple of months we have been working alongside, Master Gardner and former teacher, Cheryl Carlson. Her passion for gardening has found her here at The Broody Hen, however her background as an educator is helping her hone in on something unique and absolutely perfect as we cultivate learners and workers at the farm.

Along side our Director of Programming & Independence, Emily Frisby, Cheryl is helping our students learn how to “Scout!” This is the process of finding the pesky bugs that eat our gardens, and save the ones that are beneficial. Last week she taught a lesson on Good Bugs & Bad Bugs and next week she will continue on as we work together to teach our students how to care for the gardens!

We are thrilled to have her knowledge and skill set make its way to our organization.

Not only do the students have access now, but as sheets are put together and laminated, so too, will our volunteers and other adults!

Let’s thank Cheryl for what she brings to The Broody Hen!

Who belongs in NBBQA?
People like Ken Wood.
Ken is a Nashville-area pitmaster, competition cook, caterer, and sauce-and-rub entrepreneur with Charcoal Cowboys. He represents the kind of barbecue professional who helps make this community stronger — someone who cooks, serves, builds, competes, supports others, and keeps showing up for barbecue.
NBBQA is for pitmasters, caterers, restaurant owners, sauce and rub makers, product companies, event organizers, backyard cooks with big dreams, sponsors, advertisers, educators, and everyone who wants to be connected to the barbecue world.
So here is the question:
Who in the barbecue, grilling, or live fire world needs to be connected to NBBQA this week?
Tag a BBQ business, pitmaster, product maker, caterer, restaurant, competition cook, or barbecue friend who should be part of NBBQA.
NBBQA unites the barbecue world.
Together, we help barbecue grow stronger.

So this little experiment is getting exciting! 🌸

When we started planning our Farm-to-Table Dinner, we knew we’d need flowers. So naturally… we decided to start yet another project and grow them ourselves. 😆

This week, I walked out to the garden and realized we finally have actual rows of flowers coming up—and even a few blooms! 🌻 It felt like one of those little moments that makes all the hard work worth it.

Cue up Tim McGraw’s “Where the Green Grass Grows”… 🎶 ”…and the corn pops up in rows.” Around here, it’s the flowers popping up in rows, and I have to admit, it makes me just as happy.

This year we planted zinnias, cosmos, celosia, rudbeckia (although I’m not counting on those making much of an appearance this season), lemon basil for greenery, and of course… sunflowers.

And guess what?

They’re actually growing! 🙌💃🏼

Well… most of them. 😅

The sunflowers we planted out in the field have apparently become someone’s favorite snack. But the ones growing near the fierce protector of the farm—Ruby 🐶—are absolutely thriving. So thank you for your service, Ruby. ❤️

I know this may seem like a small thing, but it’s a big deal around here. Every bloom is another reminder of what we’re building, and with a little luck, these flowers will become the centerpieces for our Farm-to-Table Dinner in August. Even more exciting, our students will get to learn how to create floral arrangements at the end of July using the flowers and the help us arrange them for the event. 💕☺️

I just had to share because, well… it makes me smile. 😊

Happy Wednesday, friends.
