Joining us in Newport this Labor Day weekend? 🌊 The weather forecast calls for partly sunny skies and low 60’s, which, in our opinion, is *perfect* weather, especially if you’re escaping the heat of the valley or central Oregon. Bring a cozy sweatshirt and head to Newport’s Bayfront!

We highly recommend you make a reservation on our website, localocean.net or through Tock, directly.

As the seasons change, so does the menu at Local Ocean. 🦪 Chef Jacob Harth’s Bayocean Oyster House Chef in Residency menu is sunsetting for the season, with September 7 as your last day to enjoy it.

This menu was created around the shellfish of Tillamook Bay and the Oregon Coast, and as we move out of summer, availability of some of those ingredients becomes more limited. That’s part of cooking with the seasons and part of what makes this menu so special.

If there’s a dish you’ve been meaning to try, or one you need to have one more time, now’s your chance.

And don’t worry, Chef Jacob isn’t going anywhere. He’ll continue to be an important part of what’s happening at Local Ocean, with some exciting things already in the works. Think special events, guest chef collaborations, winery dinners, and more opportunities to explore Oregon seafood in new ways.

In fact, September and October might just be one of our favorite times to visit Newport. The summer crowds begin to thin, the town gets a little quieter, and here’s a little Oregon Coast secret: early fall often brings some of our most beautiful weather.

Consider this your excuse for another coastal getaway. Come enjoy the final days of our Chef in Residency menu through September 7, then stay tuned for what Chef Jacob is cooking up next.

It’s been a challenging year for Oregon’s Albacore fleet, and a recent Lincoln Chronicle article takes a closer look at what fishermen are experiencing on the water this season. 🐟 We were glad to be part of the story when reporter Angela Nebel joined us on the docks in Newport for an early morning offload from Captain Brett Montague and the F/V Jo El.

That morning, our Local Ocean crew (with the assistance of offload specialist Paul of ) unloaded nearly 6,000 pounds of beautiful Albacore tuna, frozen at sea immediately after being caught by hand, and kept at about minus 28 degrees.

While landings are down this year, the story is also a great reminder of just how important Albacore is to Oregon. It’s one of our state’s most valuable commercial fisheries, supporting fishermen, processors, restaurants and coastal communities like ours. In short: tuna is a big deal around here!

At Local Ocean, relationships with fishermen like Captain Brett are at the heart of what we do. Being able to meet the boat at the dock, unload the catch and serve Oregon seafood just steps from where it comes ashore is pretty special.

We hope you’ll give the full article a read and, more importantly, keep eating Oregon Albacore. Supporting local seafood matters every year, but in a tough season like this one, it matters even more. 💙🐟

On Chef Jacob Harth’s Chef in Residency menu at Local Ocean now: Stuffed Squash Blossoms featuring halibut-scallop mousseline with a rich green crab bisque made from five spined crab, also known as European green crab.

European green crab is an invasive species in Oregon waters and an aggressive competitor with native species, including Dungeness and red rock crab. As part of our commitment to utilizing local seafood thoughtfully, Chef Jacob and the culinary team are exploring more ways to turn this invasive species into something delicious.

Come try it while it’s on the Residency Menu! 🦀

Catching up with our interns! 👋 College students, Hussain, Jay, and Ryan, have spent the summer diving into the wonderful world of seafood with Local Ocean. As Product Development and Marketing Interns, they are integrated into multiple aspects of our business,

This summer, they’ve collectively worked through 10,000+ pounds of fish (including some very big ones), helped move our business toward 100% utilization, and conducted quality analysis testing of our products.

They are learning everything from making seafood products to selling seafood products. They’ve learned how to process pet treats, bone broths, smoked fish, and other value added products to help us reduce waste across our menu. This September, Ryan & Hussain will be returning to finish their Food Science degrees at OSU while Jay is recently graduated and ready to enter the workforce!

Clap below to cheer them on in their future endeavors! Know someone who’d love to intern with us in the future? Tag them below.

Let’s debate. Some people are purists when it comes to a traditional batter on fish & chips. What do you think? Do you prefer a b**r batter or panko-crusted?

Our Fish & Chips look a little different than the traditional b**r battered version - and that’s very intentional. 🐟 Instead of using a deep fryer, each fillet is panko-crusted and pan fried to order in fresh oil. This gives our kitchen more control over the oil we’re cooking with and helps us maintain a kitchen where we can offer more gluten free options (including our fish & chips). 🐟

At Local Ocean, you can choose between rockfish, lingcod, or Pacific halibut for your Fish & Chips. Each order comes with fries (chips!), fennel slaw, fries, tartar sauce and lemon.
