Summer is here but class is in session 🗣️🗣️🗣️Green crabs are both invasive and incredibly destructive to coastal ecosystems. They aggressively outcompete native species for food and consume massive amounts of clams, oysters and other shellfish. They also destroy eelgrass, which is a critical habitat for juvenile fin fish and other sea creatures.

Today starts Green Crab Week, which aims to raise awareness of both the problem as well as highlight how absolutely freaking delicious green crabs are!! Learn more at greencrab.org, visit participating local markets and restaurants (including Newport Wine Cellar & Gourmet Wednesday & Thursday for green crab caramel over our house made gelato) and come enjoy some green crab dishes we have on the menu like this Blackbird Farm beef tartare with green crab, pickled green garlic and Giusto potato chips 🦀

Slipper limpets aka slipper snails, aka deckers. These little gastropods are found EVERYWHERE in Narragansett Bay. If you’ve walked a beach in Rhode Island and stepped on shells they were most likely slipper limpets. They have a flavor similar to a clam since they live above littleneck beds and a texture like a mussel or oyster. Very sustainable, very local, very delicious. Featured in our tonnarelli pasta (one of The New York Times best dishes of 2024) alongside local littlenecks dug from Narragansett Bay by Swav Hermanowski and Swav Hermanowski jr
