The snacks ran out an hour ago.

We won! 🏆

Sessions took home the title of Top Savory Restaurant at Hungry Games 9.0, Bracken's Kitchen's annual fundraiser and cooking competition in Garden Grove.

500 guests came out on Sep 10 to eat, dance, and vote for their favorite dish of the night, and they picked ours. We're up against some serious talent from all over Orange County, so this one means a lot.

Beyond the fun and the friendly competition, the real win is what this event supports: community feeding, food rescue, and culinary training right here in Southern California.

Grateful to be part of an evening that does this much good, and even more grateful to our team for representing us so well.

Such an honor to be part of Tastemakers of Orange County's 10th anniversary.

OCAPICA put together an incredible night celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander inspired cuisine, alongside some of the best chefs in this county. Two dozen plus restaurants in one room, all cooking for a cause bigger than any of us.

Proceeds go toward programs that support 80,000 people a year. Mental health. Housing. Youth development. Workforce. Protecting immigrant communities. That's the kind of impact that doesn't show up on a menu, but it's the whole reason we show up.

Ten years running is no small thing. Grateful Sessions got to be a small part of it.

Thank you to everyone who came out, ate well, and gave back.

Recently I talked about hospitality being my spiritual gift. A couple of people asked what that actually means outside of a church building.

Before I get into it, I want to say something about the people who have been with me doing this. Some of them a long time now. It says job on the schedule, and what they actually give this place goes way past that. I am grateful for every one of them.

Here is what it looks like on a Thursday.

It looks like somebody catching the door before a mom with a stroller has to figure it out on her own. It looks like knowing the guy who comes in at 11:15 does not feel like explaining his order again. It looks like reading a table and knowing whether these people want to be talked to or left alone.

None of that is on a training checklist. You cannot really teach it either. You can only hire people who already have it and then get out of their way.

Are we perfect at it? Not even close. Some days the line is long and we are behind and somebody waits longer than they should have. But we try, every shift, and the trying is the part I care about.

We have been doing this a long time and that is still the part of this job I like the most.

So here's the truth, I'm a church guy.

And often in Church people talk about spiritual gifts.

Well, shocker, mine is hospitality. Imagine that! Right?

So on a day like Labor Day, it gets me so stoked that people get a day off from working hard year round. But today (for people like me) it's our day to shine.

A few friends doing this well come to mind, figured it's a good opportunity to shout them out!

There's a reason Tuesday sounds different in here.

It's the high chairs. The booths pushed together. The kid at the counter taking a full minute to decide what to get.

A lot of you found us a long time ago. Before the car seat, before the stroller parked by the door. You didn't stop coming. You just started bringing more people with you.

Now the kids know each other. They start at their own tables and end up at somebody else's. Parents look up halfway through and realize they've been talking to a stranger for twenty minutes.

So we made room for it.

Catering is the easiest place in this business to cut corners.

We do not have a catering kitchen.

We get asked about it a lot. People assume there is a warehouse somewhere with a separate crew and a separate menu for the big orders.

There isn't.

Your order gets built on the same line, in the same shop, by the same crew feeding the guy who just walked in off the sand. Same bread. Same produce. Same standard whether it is one sandwich or eighty.

That is on purpose. The minute you build a separate menu for groups, you are admitting the real food lives somewhere else.

Six shops across the OC also means your order comes from the one closest to you. Shorter drive, better food when it lands.

Thirteen years in, that part has never changed.

Thirteen years.

That is long enough to notice things.

Like how some of you have been coming in since the early days. You had your order down before we had your name down. Solo stop, quick lunch, back out the door.

Then somewhere along the way the order got bigger. An extra sandwich. Then a kids cup. Then a high chair pulled over to the end of the table.

We have watched a lot of tables grow like that.

It is easy to think of a deli as just a place you eat. But thirteen years in the same neighborhoods means we end up in the background of a lot of your life. The lunch after the water. The dinner nobody felt like cooking. The stop on the way home from practice.

We would love to stay in the background of it.

So every Tuesday, kids eat free. No coupon, no code, nothing to show us. Come in, order what you want, and the small ones are on us.

Bring all of them. The loud one too.

Thirteen years down. We are here for the rest of it.
