Seahorse is the splashy seafood brasserie from Mercer Street Hospitality and restaurateur John McDonald, which opened inside the revamped W New York – Union Square in September 2025. Designed by Rockwell Group, the 125-seat room leans nautical —scallop tiles, midnight-blue banquettes, and a sea-themed mural — while chef John Villa sends out a seafood menu that includes crudo, dover sole, and branzino, among other options, with flourishes like spicy lobster cavatelli, corn ravioli, and even duck a l’orange; a dessert cart and signature cocktails round it out. updated January 6th, 2026

Seahorse was a long time coming. The seafood restaurant in the lobby of the W Hotel Union Square opened a full year after they said they would, but once you’re inside, that timeline makes sense. This place from the people behind Lure Fishbar is meticulously designed, with a blue-tiled raw bar towards the back, a mural with mermaids on it, and about as much tasteful fish imagery as a restaurant can have before it gets mistaken for the Coney Island aquarium.

The food is generally flawless. A little predictable—think crudos, lobster pasta, and tuna au poivre—but occasionally exciting too. Smoky grilled prawns come with a calabrian chili butter that’s 100% guaranteed to stain your white tablecloth, and the oysters of the day might be tiny, briny, excellent crustaceans from New Jersey. As expected from a restaurant with a jumbo shrimp cocktail and brioche bread service on the menu, Seahorse is pricey: fit for a special occasion with people who treat branzino with the same respect they do ribeye. But the bar up front fills up first with a post-work crowd, in case a couple of oysters and a cocktail is more your speed. - Will Moore, Infatuation
