2018 has arrived and with it, the time for New Year's resolutions. Most people pledge to better themselves in some way or another and the best way to start is with the food we eat. Here are my top healthy eating recommendations that won't make you sacrifice flavor:

1) Reducing portion sizes for your primary meals and incorporating healthy snacks in between will not only keep your appetite satisfied throughout the day, but increase your metabolism. Some great snack choices include nuts (almonds, pistachios, cashews, walnuts), seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, flax), dried fruit (figs, apricots, prunes) any variety of berries & pretty much all vegetables (bell peppers, carrots, celery, snap peas, cucumbers).

2) Try replacing high carbohydrate items like bread and pasta with vegetables that can mimic them. I love to make lettuce wraps in place of a traditional sandwich and use zucchini noodles or spaghetti squash instead of regular pasta.

3) Don't fret about having to give up your sweet tooth because I have a great hack for that. Use unsweetened coconut cream or frozen bananas in place of dairy to make "ice cream". Some of my favorite flavors are chocolate chili, maple bourbon, date & blackberry.

December is always full of holiday cheer...and stress!
Don't let the menu planning for gatherings with family and friends put any unnecessary pressure on you. Here are my top 3 tips to brighten up "the most wonderful time of the year" a little more.

1) Simple hors d'oeuvres will put a smile on everyone's face (including yours!). Start the night off right with a large platter of bacon wrapped dates, a bountiful cheese plate and your favorite dip & crudités.

2) Create a signature drink that speaks to you and will keep your guests coming back for more.
My go-to is a Chai-Spiced Hot Chocolate, recipe below:
Combine 3 cans coconut milk, 1 cup bittersweet chocolate, 15 crushed cardamom pods, 15 crushed allspice berries, 2 cinnamon sticks, a 2" piece of ginger (peeled & chopped), and 1/2 cup brown sugar in a pot. Bring this to a simmer (whisking often), remove from the heat, cover with a lid & let steep for 15 minutes. After that, just strain & serve!

3) Make your meal colorful! Whether you choose to roast a bird, glaze a ham or go all out with a luxurious rack of lamb, don't forget that everyone eats with their eyes first. Adding fresh herbs, bold vegetables and a beautiful sauce to your dish will excite your guests to dig right in.

Thanksgiving will soon be upon us, so here are my Top 5 helpful tips to make the day that much better:

1) Spatchcock your bird. It cooks more evenly and takes less time as well.

2) Make your own cranberry sauce. It only takes 3 ingredients (cranberries, sugar, lemon) and is SOOO much better than canned.

3) Fill up on vegetables. Make a lot of seasonal vegetables like carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, sunchokes or turnips. Just season with salt, pepper & EVOO and roast to perfection. Your waistline will thank you later!

4) Save yourself time and make/prep as many things as you can the day before. Soups & sauces hold up especially well after a night in the fridge.

5) Use a lot of fresh herbs. Incorporate them into your dishes anyway you can. Compound herb butter under the skin of your bird, herb oil in your mashed potatoes or salad dressing, fried or fresh as a garnish. There are so many to choose from and they pack a lot of flavor punch!
