Before rooftop bars and downtown dinners, Meatpacking was defined by railroad tracks, horse-drawn deliveries, and the rise of New York’s meatpacking industry. Landmarks like Swift & Company helped shape the neighborhood in the early 1900s, when the district operated as one of the city’s busiest industrial corridors.
Today, traces of that history still live throughout Meatpacking — layered into the streets, architecture, and stories that continue to define the neighborhood surrounding Gansevoort.
