Today is Autumnal Equinox Day. It is a national holiday in Japan when day and night are of almost equal length.
It is considered a moment of balance between light and darkness, and thus a day to reflect on harmony in life.

“Ohag” is traditional Japanese sweets made of steamed sticky rice and shaped into small oval balls, and coated with sweet azuki red bean paste. Variations include coatings of soybean flour (kinako) or ground sesame seeds.

The name “ohagi” comes from hagi (bush clover), a flower that blooms in autumn, and the sweet is commonly eaten during the autumn equinox.

It is said that the sacred spirit resides in Yakusugi, the cedar trees on this island that have lived for more than a thousand years.
The moment I stepped into the forest, my heart leapt.

When I turned around, a Yakusugi that had stood there for over 3,000 years quietly revealed itself.
It reflected the profound truth of what it means to “simply exist.”

I joined a retreat envisioned by two extraordinary women:
Sachiko Katayama, founder of .doo who has devoted herself to creating enzyme brown rice (koso genmai) of the highest quality in the world, and
Miho, the guide of .yakushima (Forest Breathing), who leads you into a state of oneness with the forest and deeper connection with yourself.

The island of Yakushima, which I had always longed to visit,
and the people I had wished to meet—
when these desires aligned in a miraculous way, I knew instantly that I had to be there.

For five days on this mystical island, where gods are said to dwell and the forest has been preserved since ancient times,
I nourished myself with perfectly balanced enzyme brown rice.
Through this experience, I was able to clearly grasp the guiding direction for Rice & Miso, now in its 13th year.

From here on, I wish to deepen my study of the food and culture of my homeland, Japan,
to pursue ways of cultivating both physical and spiritual well-being,
and to continue sharing these learnings actively—
walking this path together with all of you who support Rice & Miso.
