SlimRituals Produce Bio Pak aims to become a zero waste-to-landfill packaging organization by offering molded pulp bio-trays and restaurant foodservice paper container

The issue of packaging goes hand-in-hand with that of waste and polystyrene Styrofoam is a major factor. So, why single out polystyrene? There’s the fact that its basic building block Styrene has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a possible human carcinogen. Styrofoam tray is not breathable unlike bio-trays which extend shelf-life of fresh grocery packed poultry, mushrooms,

vegetable produces and meat. Consumers and supermarkets throw out roughly 40 per cent of food produced each year. Styrofoam is a major contributor and is bad for business and worse for the environment, cannot biodegrade and takes centuries just to break down, according to Sustainable Packaging Coalition. According to agricultural scientists, about 450 tons of renewable wheat straw pulp, is equivalent to removing about 250 tons of CO2 emissions annually from the atmosphere. During pulping, the wheat straw goes through an organic enzymatic process that uses 40 percent less electricity and almost 90 percent less water than traditional chemical pulping.

A little note on Epsom salt. I see recipes here and there for bath or foot soaks that call for combining Epsom salts with Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap. Don't do it. Use these two separately, not together.

While Epsom salts have a range of therapeutic benefits, mixing it with Dr. B's Castile--or any true soap--is not a good idea. Here's a little chemistry dive into why.

1. Chemically, Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate. It is called an acidic salt because when it dissolves in water, it creates a slightly acidic solution with a pH around 6. Since soap is alkaline, when they're combined, the two create a small acid/base reaction.

2. Furthermore, and more problematically, magnesium itself is highly reactive with soap, bumping the sodium or potassium ion off the head of a soap molecule and taking its place. This resulting magnesium soap is called lime soap, or more commonly "soap scum." Which means, in essence, combining Epsom salt with Castile Soap is a recipe for soap scum. That's a problem. You don't want this on your bathroom fixtures and you don't want this coating your pipes.
