Our founder, Zach Neil , reflects on a decade of building Beetle House NYC from an idea that everyone said wouldn’t work to one of the most unique dining experiences in the world.

In this personal look back, he shares the story behind the restaurant, the highs, the lows, and what it has meant to create a place where outsiders, artists, horror fans, and the wonderfully strange have always belonged.

UPDATED TO INCLUDE LEGAL LANGUAGE-
First of all, we’d like to say thank you. What started off as a negative has turned into an overwhelming positive. We have gotten 100s of messages from you guys about artwork and what not. Unfortunately, we just don’t have enough need to hire more than one person to do this at the time, but we’re so interested in all of the various art that everyone can make so here’s what we’d like to do.

we would like to invite all of you to create some artwork for us. It can be anything you want it to be, something that can be used for a poster or flyer where there is some space left that we can fill in the information, it could be a T-shirt design or just a cool promotion for the restaurant. Anyone who’s interested in participating can send us their work and starting now every week (Sundays) for the next month, we will pick one or two that we like the best and we will buy it from that person. A set price will be within our budget so let’s call it $75 for our budget. For that $75 we DO NOT own the art. It eill be consideredba license fee for limited use. If it is something we would like to use regularly or sell (like a tshirt) we will negotiate directly with the artist to set a price and terms. If your art isn’t picked, but you would still like us to use it or feature it we would also be happy to feature it as a story on our social media and we will tag you and share your art with others so that it might give you the opportunity to get hired by someone else for some artwork needs. This DOES NOT MEAN. That if we dont pick or pay for your art, that we will still use it. It means if you want us to, we will feature it as way to thank you for participating and if you dont, we wont.

we are also thinking about creating a night at the restaurant where Artist and creators specifically can meet up to network and have drinks and hang out in our atmosphere. We would provide some discounted drinks and snacks and the space in an opportunity for people to just network. We could invite other local businesses or regional people to come hang with artists and creatives who make content for bars and restaurants and other businesses. We are just spitballing here, but we like to turn a negative into a positive. We’ve been doing that by celebrating Halloween every day for the last 10 years.

Today, we tried to post an update about our space now being for rent for private parties and events etc etc. unfortunately, as a small niche business that celebrates Halloween year round, we don’t have a budget for an art director or a pro artist. Sometimes, some of our team use what resources they do have available to get quick messaging out. In today’s ever changing world ai is a resource everyone (mostly) is using in some regard, even if against their will (search engines). However, as a restaurant that has been celebrating creativity and personal expression through art, food and music we understand that using ai for art is not a tasteful action. We heard the complaints and this is our reply. We are looking for a flyer for social media that explains that we are now renting out our space for private events, parties, birthdays, and celebrations of ALL KINDS. If there is an artist out here that would like to take a crack as this we would love to hire you, not only for this, but for future advertisements that we will need to create. Again, we don’t have the big budgets, but we have learned a valuable lesson today about supporting all artists, the way we want to be supported. So what we have, we will give and share. To be honest, sometimes we actually can’t tell the difference when art is sent to us, we aren’t always sure if the person sending it created it or ai generated it. Moving forward we will not use generated ai art knowingly, and we will rely on what we can make ourselves or hire others to create things when we need them. Thank you for keeping us accountable and sharing your passion with us. We love you all and appreciate you.
