After 5 glorious years of Winona’s, we have made the difficult decision to close for good, at the end of this month. Our last service will be dinner on Saturday December 21st.
I had a version of this in my head that spoke to the struggles of operating a family run restaurant - the red tape, the inflation, the incessant putting out of fires. But every time I came to write it down, when I tried to put into a post something that somehow honored the past 5 years and the space we built together with our team, it didn’t feel right to speak to anything but joy. The joy of opening during a global pandemic, of pivoting every which way and of somehow making it work, against all odds. The joy of being able to serve nourishing food in the blistering cold to our guests sat outside, huddled under a gas heater we snagged on marketplace. The joy of sharing our space each week, with young chefs, brimming with excitement to cook their food for a packed dining room. The joy of seeing our team evolve, grow and nurture each other, taking care of this space and the people in it, day after day. The joy of hosting weddings for people in love, the joy of bringing families together. The joy of being a tiny piece of someone’s story, of becoming someone’s spot, a place where they feel at home, where they feel cared for. The joy of being able to feed people, every day, to help them find their new favorite wine, their new favorite dish, to help them celebrate, commiserate and everything in between.
It has been an honor and we couldn’t be more grateful for the last five years. Thank you to everyone who has dined with us over the years and our biggest thanks to our team. Our books are open for the next few weeks, we look forward to seeing you for one last toast!
