Been thinking a lot about home lately.
We spent time in Barbados, Saint Lucia and Jamaica this summer and no matter where we went there was this familiarity.
The food. The smells. The markets. Somebody chopping a coconut. Fish coming in from the water. Kids running around. Cricket playing. Somebody cooking. Somebody telling you come taste this.
Different islands. Different accents. Different ways of doing things but the feeling is the same.
There’s a level of care throughout the Caribbean that’s hard to explain unless you’ve felt it. Care for the food. Care for the people. Care for how something is prepared. Care for making sure everybody gets some.
Nothing forced. Nothing performative. It’s just how we move.
And I think that’s why it always feels like home to us.
The more we travel the more we realize home isn’t always one place. Sometimes it’s just recognizing yourself and your people wherever you go.
Care is the recipe.
