joy and reflection:

the meowcatz treated me to an incredible dining experience this past week.

halfway through the meal, chef shared with us the history of bennachin, meaning "one pot", a reference to jollof rice, the source of inspiration for the jambalaya in our southern culinary tradition.

he explained how ingredients take turns in a singular vessel, cooking throughout the day to create the multi-layered dish.

offers two seatings a night. everyone begins dining as a room, affording opportunity to share time and energy with the strangers across the table. meowcatz and i got to exchange tasting notes with our table-mates, learning from our differences in perspective, finding value in plurality.

i think of how rice is an ingredient that ties so many of our histories together, a conversation serigne and i have shared more than once. every grain carries the memory of its cultivation across time and lands. consuming it, is literally taking in the shared experience of humanity.

yet, rice is both singular and plural, existing in the full spectrum of shapes, sizes, and colors.

whenever i eat rice, i try to be mindful of its character. giving it gratitude for the many ways it brings us to the table.

and then i think of the many of us who will not be eating rice tonight. i'm heartbroken for them, their children, and mine.

find anchor in your joy. be radical in your rest. and store strength for the sowing of the fields. because we must plan a harvest. 💜

visited fritai yesterday.

gotta show love for these restaurant gems during this difficult month. incredible food, and honestly, a great bargain, too.

chef charly pierre has been nominated twice for a james beard, and has competed on top chef. but if not for either of those things, he is still a talented chef, with an infectious smile, who is adding haitian flavors to the culinary tapestry of new orleans. let's not lose anymore of these wonderful independently-owned businesses this year.
