In my deep dive into the diverse realms of magnolias, here’s a paean to the ultravivid pink deciduous Campbell’s Magnolua that I’d been calling “a tulip tree” for all of my life, until this year.

I hope you find your kicks wit’ dis 1, fresh up on my Patreon

Hi, although I am abdicating the modern calendar for the ancient Ethiopian calendar, so to me it’s just another day in the 4th month of 2018, with my blessing to those of you on this New Years Eve being that by the time the Ethiopians and I arrive into 2025 we will have dismantled this fascist f**kery and those responsible for this blight will be dead or in jail…. Let’s make it so!!

Leaf peepers don’t get it about the soft auburn mats that fall from cypress trees. Even I as a longtime swamp relic from New Orleans overlook & take 4 granted the ancient gymnosperm cypress mulch, when really it’s kinda a fairytale of evolution long before the dinosaurs roamed as we walk over the soft cypress “leaves” that have been falling each year for millions of years and which stand sentinel over our beloved Louisiana swampy neighborhoods, giving the best deepest shade in the summertime heat, reminding me that eternity is always within the here + now…

dropping a playlist, curated home recording of my first thoughts about how much I lean into loving Ethiopian Jazz by featuring cuts from my own stash of vinyl…. lol a life misspent on cooking like an artist but my album collection is stellar! if you were to ask me I could only add one song to the Voyager’s Golden Disc my vote is “Musicawi Silt” on the Hailu & the Walias LP….and many other classic bangers such as Mulatu’s “Nètsansèt” will@keep your ears glued to the Ethio-Grooves….when the podcast is finished, I’ll push this msg again…isn’t it nice to celebrate something beautiful, personal, and enduring in this burning world as we fight the billionaires? The new album ‘Mulatu Plays Mulatu’ is a gorgeous milestone, a triumphant & heartfelt gift from the foundational sonic artistry of Mulatu, who sits with Thelonious and Duke Ellington as my music avatars who’ve shown me how to live thru the art of composition. As a chef who spent my life making crazy elevated food, these 3 are the exemplars in the soundtrack of my life and career. I wanted every plate that came zooming outta my kitchen to carry the erudite swing that lands in your mouth like horn line you hum along + feel in your bones, every bite the beat that tells your tastebuds a song and the melody + flavors tingle + linger like the unforgettable ephemera we are….

The sweet potatoes I saw today were massive, lumpy behemoths! The one I’m holding weighs more than 2.5 lbs, and it wasn’t alone… apparently, sweet potato monsters lurk under the topsoil of Louisiana!

I’m proud & grateful to have thrived & survived these twenty years since “the levees break” in 2005 New Orleans. I gave y’all all my best as a chef, and slowly a new set of chapters is emerging on my side of this equation & masquerade we call Life on this “yolo” chance why we’re here… so I made a plumcot/blueberry/red wine Cornbread Cobbler dusted w/ hibiscus sugar & a petite scoop of my blackberry/magnolia petal ice cream…
