New York inspired us again! Come try our new Creole Shakshuka Flatbread.

Creole saucy. Runny eggs. Bubbling bread. Blistered cherry tomatoes. Drizzled with a salty feta cream.

I walk to work most mornings. It's a three-block walk, but on any given day I can stop half a dozen times to chat with a neighbor or to pet a dog. They'll ask how the bakery's doing, or if I've got any trips planned. I'll ask about their grandbaby, or when their husband's coming back from up north. I watch the gardens grow, then get snapped back by a frost. If it's raining, sometimes I stomp a puddle like I'm a toddler again. Nobody's watching. It's just for me.
If I'm sitting at a table outside, eating lunch or catching up with a team member, the same thing happens. I wave at a neighbor driving by. I holler good morning to a kid on his bike, reminding him he needs to get his brakes fixed. He waves me off. I know he knows I care.
Some days there are more dogs outside than at an actual dog park, and our customers make the rounds table to table, visiting, handing out treats.
"Community bakery" can feel like such a contrived phrase. But for me, it just means these soft moments get built with as much care as a long-fermented bread. Slow and intended.
When the line's wrapped around the building and the dining room's full, I feel like a butterfly moving flower to flower, pollinating. I get to watch connections form in real time. It's thrilling.
But underneath that, there's something I'm not even doing. It's like a kind of mycelium, creeping out past the building, threading its way through the neighborhood on its own. When people tell me how much they love this place, I break into a wide smile and just say: I'm so proud of what we've built. It's everything I could ever dream of.

Every September 11, I think about my dad.

He worked one building away from the World Trade Center.

When I woke up that morning, I knew where he was. And then I didn’t know anything.

I didn’t hear from him until that night. He had made an epic journey home, along with thousands of other New Yorkers trying to get off that island and back to the people who loved them.

I remember being scared all day. The kind of scared that f***s with time, makes it stop and speed up simultaneously. And I remember finally hearing his voice that night.

My dad was a very private person. He almost never talked about what he saw or experienced that day.

In 2017, I was in New York for work and we went to the 9/11 Memorial together. It was his first time back to that part of the city since September 11, 2001.

And that day, he talked. He told me about where he was. What he saw. How he got home. The things he had carried quietly for sixteen years.

I mostly listened.

I remember standing there with him and feeling incredibly close to my dad. I understood something about him that I hadn't understood before. It is one of those days with him that I treasure even more now that he is gone.

So today, I remember September 11 through him.

I remember how frightened I was waiting for his call.

I remember the relief of hearing his voice.

And I remember standing beside him sixteen years later, finally hearing his story.

I miss you, Dad.
