The image of a c**n, as we understand it in black American vernacular, is a dark skinned , big lipped man grinning and usually eating watermelon. We hold contempt and shame for this image, as it has come to be associated with simple mindedness and laziness.. meanwhile, brothers be working themselves to literal death in real life. And the moment we find space to not be subject to all the aspects of American oppression and fellowship with our people and , God forbid, smile with each other, we get labeled as shiftless, shuck and jiving, ne'er-do-wells cuz we ain't hu***ng on boss man's time. Much like the mammie trope, our worth is validated only by our uplifting and service to white interests. So, nowadays, the images of black men are super serious. We brood and scowl and mean mug our way through a twisted reality where black boy joy is a meme only meant for social media. And any smiling negro is not taken seriously and emasculated. Do c**ns exist? And if so, how are they defined? Well, what a c**n is not is a smiling happy black Man! What a c**n is not is a Black Man taking time out for self care. What a c**n is not is black men in joyous fellowship with one another.
P.S. I f love watermelon! It's refreshing and delicious!
