Along this serene stretch of the Mississippi River, just north of New Orleans, a pivotal moment in American history unfolded as the largest slave revolt courageously challenged the status quo, paving the way for future generations to build a more just society.

On the night of January 8, 1811, Charles Deslondes, an enslaved man, led an inspiring uprising on the German Coast, a testament to the enduring spirit of resistance against oppression. Inspired by the Haitian Revolution, Deslondes and hundreds of enslaved people marched toward New Orleans, fueled by their determination for freedom. Haiti is forever linked to New Orleans for many reasons but this is the most impactful.

Widely considered the largest and one of the most highly organized armed revolts of enslaved people in U.S. history, its scale and military precision made it a watershed moment in the resistance against chattel slavery.
