🎂 🎉11 years ago, junzi started with hungry Chinese students, late-night Skype calls home, and recipes shared across time zones. 🎂 11 years ago, junzi started with a simple idea from a group of students: Chinese food on campus could feel a little more like home. 🏠 What began at Yale in 2015 has grown into 11 years of late-night meals, quick lunches between classes, familiar flavors, new favorites, and a whole lot of bowls shared along the way. Through it all, one thing hasn’t changed: junzi is still built by students, for students. 💚
And now, junzi is turning 11! 🥳 So of course, there’s only one way to celebrate:
✨ $11 for 11 years ✨

Happy National Dumpling Day! 🥟 One dumpling, five very different ways to wrap, cook, and eat it across China.

🍳 蛋饺 Egg Dumplings
A Jiangnan favorite, especially around Shanghai and Suzhou. Instead of dough, a thin layer of egg wraps the savory filling into a little golden “ingot.”

🥟 煎饺 Pan-Fried Dumplings
Popular across northern China, 煎饺 are cooked until soft and juicy on top and crisp underneath. 冰花煎饺 takes it one step further with a delicate, lacy “ice flower” crust spreading across the pan.

💧 水饺 Boiled Dumplings
The classic northern Chinese dumpling: wheat wrappers, savory filling, straight into boiling water. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, dumplings had already become an established part of food culture across northern China.

🌿 柳叶饺 Willow-Leaf Dumplings
Named for the long, tapered shape created by pleating the wrapper like a willow leaf. Versions can be found across China, including a distinctive willow-leaf style around Jining, Shandong.

🦐 虾饺 Har Gow / Shrimp Dumplings
Straight from the Cantonese dim sum tradition of Guangzhou and Guangdong: translucent starch wrappers folded around plump shrimp filling. Tiny, delicate, and one of the icons of a proper dim sum table.

Same family, very different dumplings. Which one gets the first spot on your plate? 👀🥟

POV: the school bell just rang and you have ¥5 in your pocket. 👀

Before convenience stores, there was the little shops 小卖部 outside the school gate. The original after-school shopping spree. You could crush and shake a bag of Little Raccoon Crispy Shake Noodles 小浣熊干脆面, dig into a Cosmo Chocolate Cup 星球杯 with that ridiculously tiny spoon, grab a pack of Spicy Gluten Strips 辣条 for the walk home, or spend your last few coins on WOWO Milk Candy 喔喔奶糖. And yes, sometimes the collectible card inside the snack was more important than the snack itself. 🤭

Generations of kids learned some very serious budgeting skills here. If you had ¥1, you had options. If you had ¥5, you were basically rich. 💰 What are you buying at the 小卖部? And what childhood snack did we miss? 👇

Plot twist: some of your favorite ingredients are just going through a phase. 🌱 Edamame is soybean in its green era. Baby corn is corn picked before it grows up. And green, black, red, and white peppercorns? Same berry, different stages and outfits. Keep these fun facts in mind, because a fresh lineup of bowls is coming soon to Junzi this fall. 👀 Know another surprising food fact? Drop it in the comments and blow our minds. 🤯

🥬 What happens when something fresh meets something fermented? You get Edamame with Mustard Greens 雪菜毛豆, a simple pairing that has long held a special place on Jiangnan tables.

🤷But first, what exactly is Mustard Greens 雪菜? It begins as 雪里蕻, xuelihong, a leafy variety of Chinese mustard green traditionally harvested in the cooler seasons. Fresh xuelihong has crisp stems and a naturally peppery, slightly bitter flavor. After the leaves are wilted, salted, pressed, and fermented, they become the savory preserved greens known as 雪菜, xuecai. The process softens the leaves and develops their distinctive salty, lightly tangy, and deeply umami-rich flavor.

🧊Before refrigeration, preserving vegetables this way allowed Jiangnan families to enjoy leafy greens throughout the year. When fresh edamame came into season, the two naturally found their way into the same wok. The snow vegetable brought deep savory flavor, while the tender edamame added sweetness and a satisfying bite.

🫛Over time, this humble stir-fry became especially popular across Shanghai, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and the surrounding Jiangnan region. It could appear beside congee at breakfast, over rice for a quick meal, or in noodles, rice cakes, and home-style dishes with bamboo shoots, tofu, or minced pork.

Simple ingredients, generations of comfort. Coming soon to Junzi. 🌱🥢
