We've been having some interesting discussions recently about the Lincoln Highway 1914 feeder route that the LHA created in response to President Wilson's request to move the route between Philadelphia and Gettysburg to take a detour through Baltimore and Washinton DC before it headed west. Thankfully, the LHA stuck with their original route that provided the "most direct route."

This early 1920's Gulf Refining Company, "Tour De Luxe" map shows three routes that the LHA could have taken west between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. To the north was the William Penn Highway, across the southern tier was a network of existing toll roads that was chosen to become the Lincoln Highway and to the south was the National Road from Baltimore which became US 40.

Wondering if this map gives us further confirmation of the Baltimore/Washington Lincoln Highway feeder route. Before maps, the driver would only have had guide books and early automobile trail road signs to navigate cross country. After Philadelphia, the cities listed are Chester PA, Wilmington DE and then Bel Air, Baltimore and Hyattsville across Maryland to DC.

Compare this route to the current Lincoln Highway Association on-line map. Go to comments for link to map listing on eBay. Go to on-line to zoom into the feeder route.

This rare vintage postcard of Mander's Tourist Court between Stoystown and Jennerstown along the Lincoln Highway sold on eBay before we ccould even post it.

We love the canvas awnings to provide shade to the cabin front portch. We also like the square building to the left but not exactly sure what this was. Maybe a arbor providing shade to a common area for guests.

Brian Butko in his book, The Lincoln Highway, Pennsylvania Traveler's Guide (2nd edition, pg. 241), states that this was listed as the Schrock's Tourist Camp in the 1927 Mohawk-Hobbs guide, then Mander's Tourist Court in the the 1940 Shell directory, and later on this location stood the "Modern Golf Ski Swim Inn" featuring rooms with coffee and TV!

The cooler temperatures are inviting us to pull over and enjoy a hot "cup of joe" on our Lincoln Highway roadtrip. ☕️

Vintage postcard of the Colonial Coffee Shop near Ligonier looks like a good place to pull over and fill up your tank and your coffee cup.

Can anyone tell us more about this intersting bus out front?
