The origins of this bread date back to the year 1870, when Alexander Villeneuve, a French baker, moved to Guatemala and opened his own bakery in Guatemala City. People started calling this bread “French bread” “pan francés” because of his nationality.
Over the years, his recipe was adapted and became what it is today, a staple in Guatemalan households. This French bread is similar to a sourdough, fluffy on the inside, perfect for sandwich making, it traditionally accompanies breakfast foods like beans, eggs, tamales and many more dishes.
