ใฝ๏ธLabor Day was inspired by the labor movement.
It honors the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement.
ใฝ๏ธThe first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882 in New York City. Thousands of workers participated in a parade organized by the Central Labor Union.
ใฝ๏ธOregon was the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday in 1887. Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York followed soon after.
ใฝ๏ธPresident Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894. Interestingly, this happened just days after the violent Pullman Strike, when tensions between workers and employers were extremely high.
ใฝ๏ธLabor Day is always the first Monday in Septemberโwhich means it can fall anywhere from September 1โ7.
ใฝ๏ธThe original Labor Day celebrations looked very different from todayโs. Early celebrations often included huge parades, speeches from union leaders, picnics, and community gatherings.
ใฝ๏ธThe โno white after Labor Dayโ rule isnโt actually a law or official tradition. ๐ It became a fashion convention among wealthy Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, itโs largely considered outdated.
ใฝ๏ธLabor Day marks the unofficial end of summer in the United States- which is why youโll see end-of-summer sales, cookouts, beach trips, and back-to-school celebrations associated with it.
