Pickens, South Carolina is home to the Pumpkintown General Store & Cafe, where a meal still feels tied to the old mountain crossroads around it. The store traces its roots back to 1938, when the Burgess family opened the original business along Pumpkintown Highway, serving both nearby families and travelers moving through this corner of Upstate South Carolina. The brick building has changed with time, but it still carries the feel of a true country store, with a cafe now at the heart of the experience.

Instead of the old dry goods and everyday supplies that once filled the shelves, visitors come in today for hot breakfasts, country ham, biscuits, grits, burgers, daily specials, and homemade desserts like banana pudding. It is the kind of place where local conversation, simple Southern food, and views of the nearby Blue Ridge foothills all come together.

Pumpkintown itself has deep roots, too. The community was settled before 1800, and a historic marker says the name came from an early traveler who saw the Oolenoy Valley covered with huge yellow pumpkins. In 1791, Pumpkintown was one of only two towns in what is now Pickens County. That history gives the cafe even more character, making it more than just a breakfast or lunch stop. It is a small but memorable piece of South Carolina mountain country, especially for anyone driving toward Table Rock, scenic Highway 11, or the nearby mountain roads.
