HOME 👏🏻 OF 👏🏻 THE 👏🏻 WAGON 👏🏻 WHEEL 👏🏻 CINNAMON 👏🏻 ROLL!
Settle in for a minute, will ya? I have a story for you starring second chances and gooey cinnamon rolls. I promise that it will be worth your time! ⏱️
In 2023 we re-opened Annie’s Custard and Cafe 🍦in Nauvoo, Illinois under new ownership and began offering our 7” Wagon Wheel Cinnamon rolls. They rolled out the door as quickly as we could bake them, making several batches every day. One memorable customer came from Phoenix declaring herself Cinnamon Roll Queen. 👸🏽Apparently every year at holiday time, she distributed hundreds of cinnamon rolls around the Valley of the Sun to business associates. Each client and vendor wished upon a star and sent letters up North 🎅🏻 hoping to be on her distribution list. The queen eyed our cinnamon rolls and took one back to her AirBnB. The very next day she marched right back in and snatched up 7 more for her family and declared, “You know what you’re doing with these! They are perfection!” Our humble Wagon Wheel 🛞was declared to be perfect by The Queen of Cinnamon Rolls 👸🏽 herself!
While we were busy being crowned 👑 and licking our fingers from the perfectly blended caramel and frosting, we got word that based on regulation we would have to remove our oven from the restaurant. We tried every workaround, but 2024 was a bleak time when The Wagon Wheel Cinnamon roll wasn’t offered at all. The new requirement? We had to find a self-ventilating oven.
Enter 2025—we installed a new oven and reintroduced the Wagon Wheel Cinnamon roll to our menu!
The good thing about this new oven was that it baked. ⏲️ The bad thing was that it didn’t bake evenly. 😩 The amount of air it took to create the self ventilation system 💨 was drying out the wagon wheel on the edges and leaving them raw in the middle. Our wagon wheels got on the struggle bus 🚌 and sealed the lug nuts like a midwest tire forced to endure countless seasons of extreme cold temperatures 🥶and suffocating humidity 🥵. Our best attempt was to put a metal heat conductor into the center of each roll. We just shrugged and said, “Every wheel needs an axel and a little physics!” Then we wiped off our greasy hands and tried to keep rolling. Unfortunately, the wheels kept going flat.
2026 season opened with endless determination and testing. 👩🏽🔬 The kitchen smelled amazing as we baked batch after batch to try and find cinnamon roll perfection again. You know the kind—pillowy softness with gooey goodness puddling at the bottom.
In the biggest comeback story of any bakery east of the Mississippi 🌅, the Wagon Wheel slowly returned to her formal glory 👑. Week after day and test after trial 👩🏽🍳, we learned a thing or two. Our precocious pastry likes a spa-like treatment in our steam oven and she stays softest when she is baked with her friends. A spa day with friends? I have never related more to a cinnamon roll in my life. 💅
So if you like comeback stories with caramel bottoms, gooey centers and frosted tops 🍮as much as we do, come give the new, improved (but really old, already perfect) Wagon Wheel Cinnamon Roll a try!
