A rare full blue moon peaks this weekend! 🌕 But it will appear mostly full tonight and Sunday night too.

PEAK: 4:45AM EDT SUNDAY MAY 31

The fullest night will be Saturday night into Sunday morning. The moon will be 99% full the night before and the night after, which is really hard to tell the difference.

I always like to look at the moon the night before peak because it rises earlier in the evening.

WHY BLUE MOON?
We like to say “once in a blue moon” for something that happens rarely. There are two definitions:
🌕Original definition: During a 3-month period, if there was going to be a 4 full moons, the 3rd one would be called a blue moon. This would help farmers stay on track during the planting and harvest seasons.
🌕Most commonly used definition now: 2nd full moon in a single month.

For this blue moon, it’s the 2nd full moon of May 2026. This happens once every 2-3 years
