Well we weren’t technically supposed to be at market today, we couldn’t resist bringing this bounty to market. Thanks for a great send off before our summer vacation recharge to get us in the fall mode. Lofty mix, SPINACH, and potatoes coming back to market next weekend. No CSA this week while we’re away.

If you’ve visited us at market, you have probably talked to Beau, the tomato kid, about his favorite varieties of tomatoes and their best uses! He knows his veggies, helps you check out, and yes, he can do the math in his head! Otto is a master at stocking items at the booth and is learning how to make change. Beau and Otto help out on the farm harvesting onions, beans, and tomatoes. The next time you see them- give them a high five for their hard work!

We have a packed harvest for tomorrow’s market! Huge cabbage, lots of cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, specialty zucchini and squash, and beautiful peppers! We’re adding Baltic Rose potatoes to market, have an abundance of our tri-mix color snap beans, and the boys harvested red onions this morning. We’re working hard this summer to fund the insulation of our new wash/pack building. Every purchase you make helps us finish our winterization of the building— making our winter greens season more successful and more greens for you! See you tomorrow!

The pigs get to enjoy veggie treats regularly on the farm. There are items that we are unable to sell due to defects or they don’t have a market— those items either are preserved by us or we feed to our 3 pigs that we raise each year. The veggies are a great addition to their diet. The meat is processed by us and family and we live on the meat for about a year. We gift family members meat as well. Full circle on the farm!

CSA week 8 on the farm! We’re rolling into August feeling great about giant peppers, abundant tomatoes, and still growing nice heads of lettuce. May and June are all about field prep and planting… July rolls around and you think, great! Now we can get caught up on field cultivation and maintenance but your harvesting crops most of the time and seeding for fall. Now we August and we’re in full fall planting mode in the fields and starting to prep some caterpillar tunnels that are mostly used for the shoulder seasons for their first fall plantings. It never really slows down on a farm like ours, the days priorities just change. Soon enough winter will come and we’ll be dreaming of tomatoes and cucumbers.. those pesky crops that require constant attention and input. But alas, we go on!

Today one of our Women Farmer mentees came out to the farm to work in one of our tunnels to learn how we trellis our cherry tomatoes, intercrop with radishes seeded with the , use the 4-way precision seeder from Johnny’s, and finally install the drip irrigation on each crop. We zipped through the work and learned a lot… like how to not put your drip lines away while turning over a tunnel from winter to summer crops!

What a pleasure to be going into year two of this program with and . Thank you to our mentees, program leaders, and fellow farmers!
