What is Cinco de Mayo?

The United States influenced the Battle of May 5th (1862) primarily through the moral and symbolic support of Mexican Americans and ideological resistance against the French occupation, as France intended to use Mexico as a base to support the Confederacy in the American Civil War. Furthermore, the hero of the battle, Ignacio Zaragoza, was born in Texas, which strengthened the connection.

Civil War Context: France sought a victory in Mexico to secure supplies for the South (the Confederacy). The French defeat at Puebla delayed these plans, benefiting the Lincoln administration.
