Employee Spotlight: Christopher Keaton

In a world where it’s common in small businesses to have people looking for work that misrepresent their intentions to land a temporary job, Chris is a breath of fresh air. Chris came to us in the middle of the pandemic with open and honest communication about what he was looking for in a temporary part time job. Integrity can be hard to find, but Chris didn’t give up his to get a temporary job. He shows up reliably with a great attitude and always helps us out with additional requests when he can. He’s over qualified and an asset to the Farm Stand while he’s here, mainly doing home deliveries in Hamilton County, but also helping out with retail sales and stocking. He’s anxious for his normal job in film making and video editing to get going again, but in the meantime he really likes the ethics and standards of the Downtown Farm Stand and says it’s “very worthwhile and invaluable in our community” and he likes contributing to keeping it going. Thanks Chris for showing us how it’s done!

Employee spotlight: Mike McClure
Mike is a kind, intelligent, and affable person and a pleasure to work with. He has an “old school” work ethic that is rare these days. That work ethic translates into other areas of his life. He walks 3 miles round trip to and from work, and even walks to the places like the Bracken Library (for pleasure) from his house on the South East side. He attributes his good health and fitness to walking a lot at the youthful age of 72. He depends on his job at The Downtown Farm Stand to supplement his retirement. We are fortunate to have Mike McClure on our team!

This is just a kind reminder that we cannot be all things to all people right now. The changes in our business have been unavoidable, even as we work to keep them to a minimum. Decreased restaurant and store hours, the chicken issue, and flour changes, are just some of the decisions we have had to make and have all been necessary to keep things going. What we’re most proud of is that we have never sacrificed our high quality standards. We have plans and are working to make things better as we work on a new e-commerce website and point of sale system that will dramatically improve the customer experience. But the completely unpredictable economy, the labor shortage, product shortages, and money being tight due to less revenue are causing all kinds of stress. Honestly, Sara and I are carrying a heavy load. Please know we’re doing the best we can, day by day. This all being said, we are well stocked, so come and see us! We’re coming up on 14 years of being open in May, and we very much appreciate your continued support. Picture of Sergeant Pepper added for cuteness.

The End of Pastured Chicken for Greg Gunthorp – Pastured Poultry Talk

It's time for an announcement that some of you may already know, Gunthorp Farms is not producing any chicken in 2021. They are continuing and excited to focus on pastured pork production and turkeys. The reasons are many, but in short, chicken is a food in the US that is considered the cheapest protein source and it shouldn't be. But that cheap chicken is raised in confinement on industrial operations with many short cuts taken to produce it at a low price. Any chicken you purchase from a grocery that isn't from a pasture based farm where you can actually see the chickens currently being raised is from a confinement operation or from a compromised operation that greenwashes without question.
But to raise chicken responsibly on pasture in a humane way that respects the chicken, our environment, and human health is not an inexpensive process. And so selling a compromised corporate product like you find in the other local big stores is not something that Sara and I are interested in doing. We refuse to compromise just to meet a misplaced consumer demand created from an Industrial system that is unsustainable at best. Please learn more and listen to the podcast below with Greg Gunthorp to understand more about your food system.

What this means for you in the short term is that this week will be the last weekend to get your favorite chicken items in the Farm Stand Deli until sold out. While we will have a fantastic new pasture raised chicken supplier with Nightfall Farm, Liz and Nate will only supply us with whole chickens because their processor doesn't process pieces. There are literally no farms that are able to raise pasture raised chickens and have them processed and sold in parts at any sort of a "competitive price." It just doesn't work that way.
I have completed an exhaustive search over a couple of months and we are very happy with the quality from Nightfall Farm and we're excited to develop this partnership. We hope you will embrace them as a new supplier. At this time we will no longer have chicken in our deli except on special occasions and we will be substituting with turkey where applicable. Nightfall is a small farm and they are delivering to us from Southern Indiana so the price point is higher, but deservedly so.
This is a complex subject that deserves a lot more conversation. We encourage you to listen to the podcast and ask questions that you may have and I'll be happy to answer them. In the meantime, come and get your favorites this weekend, and pick up a whole chicken from Nightfall Farm. You'll be hearing more about this subject in the future!

Greg Gunthorp raises turkeys on pigs on pasture at Gunthorp Farms in LaGrange, Indiana. He used to raise “a lot” of pastured chickens. Then Covid hit and business changed. The only poultry production to survive 2020 is pastured turkeys.

Muncie Three Trails Music Series

The Downtown Farm Stand is a proud sponsor of the great @Muncie Three Trails Music Series. Below is the press release with this summer’s music lineup! We can’t wait!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Muncie Three Trail Music Series is Back for 2021
Muncie, IN – April 19, 2021
After taking an unplanned year off in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Muncie Three Trails Music Series is pleased to be back and officially announce its 2021 lineup. This will be the 8th season in which the series presents critically acclaimed national recording artists in four FREE concerts at Canan Commons in downtown Muncie. All shows begin at 7 PM and are all ages. Complete information on the series and all artists, including samples of their music, can be found at www.munciethreetrails.com.

Modern Cajun band Lost Bayou Ramblers will open our series on Saturday, July 10th. With a 2018 Grammy award for “Best Regional Roots Album” for Kalenda, contributions to the score of Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild, and touring stints with both Arcade Fire and the Violent Femmes, the Lost Bayou Ramblers continue to swing wide from their Louisiana home base. But their reputation within that base is solidly established, reflected by their 2012 release, Mammoth Waltz,” being selected as #2 in the “Top 21 Louisiana albums of the 21st Century” by the Times Picayune. The Lost Bayou Ramblers will play an acoustic set of traditional Cajun music to open the show.

8-piece Memphis soul/gospel powerhouse the Sensational Barnes Brothers will grace the Canan Commons stage on Saturday, July 24th. Bridging the gap between traditional black gospel and the soul sounds of Stax and Al Green, Chris and Courtney Barnes unleashed a critically acclaimed debut album, Nobody’s Fault But My Own, in 2020 and have caught fire throughout the Midwest and nation-wide. Memphis rock ‘n’ soul instrumental group the SBB Band will open the show. This concert is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County.

Acclaimed bluegrass group Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper will return to the Canan Commons stage on Saturday, August 7th. Michael Cleveland is one of the most decorated fiddle players in bluegrass history, with 12 IBMA “Fiddle Player of the Year” awards and a 2018 induction into the National Fiddle Player Hall of Fame. He and his group, Flamekeeper, also won the 2020 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album and are also 6-time IBMA winners for Instrumental Group of the Year. “He plays fearless and…makes you play fearless,” says Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill. Muncie’s own Bashville Boys will open the show.

Asleep At The Wheel, winners of 10(!!) Grammy awards, will conclude our season on Saturday, September 11th. Ray Benson founded Asleep at the Wheel 50 years ago with a simple goal: to play and help revive American roots music. In particular, Ray fell in love with western swing (which Benson calls “jazz with a cowboy hat”) because of its unique combination of American blues, swing and traditional fiddling, and also for its demanding musical chops. Indeed, the musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends. A quick scan of awards, such as "Touring Band of the Year" (CMAs, 1976) and "Lifetime Achievement in Performance" (Americana Music Awards, 2009), not to mention near dominance of the Grammy "Country Instrumental" category over the years, backs up this reputation. You can be guaranteed that, between their Texas Twin Fiddles and Boogie Piano, you’ll be dancin’ down the aisles and swingin’ all night long when The Wheel comes to Muncie. The Ball State University Jazz Lab Ensemble will open the show. This concert is sponsored by Ball State University.

The Muncie Three Trails Music Series is a non-profit partnership between Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, Muncie Arts and Culture Council, and Rick Zeigler, series founder and organizer. The mission of the series is to bring critically acclaimed, national recording artists to perform at Canan Commons, Muncie’s premier outdoor performance venue, located in the heart of Downtown Muncie. A second mission is to promote the many recreational, artistic, and cultural attractions located along, or in close proximity to, Canan Commons and Muncie’s popular “Three Trails” -- The White River Greenway, Cardinal Greenway, and Muncie Arts and Culture Trail. We hope attendees will heed our slogan, “Explore the Trails, Enjoy the Music”.

Our Story

We are a very unusual success story for these tough economic times. While most independent stores had closed or had been forced out of business due to competition from big box stores during the recession, we are a kind of retro grocery store. Put simply, we buy organically produced food from farmers and sell it to local residents. Even though it’s not rocket science, it is labor intensive, and other grocery stores do not purchase like this anymore.

Making the operational shift in our purchasing procedures puts money back into local farms. This in turn helps build rural communities and provides fresh healthy food for inner city residents. The money pumped into our community helps create a diverse local economy. Because all of our producers use organic methods, the farms are all environmentally sustainable and are not putting chemicals into the soil, air, water, and food.

We are an organic grocery store, deli restaurant, and home delivery service with a full selection of staples and more. We have a small organic farm that supplies our grocery store and deli with some of our fresh produce. We buy everything we can find from local organic farms. The Farm Stand also offers Farm to Table interpretations of classic deli sandwiches, paninis, and salads along with some of our own creations, or you can build your own sandwich or panini for dine in or carryout.

We make our deli sandwich bread, our sauces, and two of our meats in house. We offer two delicious house made soups everyday. All sandwiches or paninis can be made into a gluten free salad or lettuce wrap. The Farm Stand offers organic beer, in bottles and on draft, and a variety of wines available to drink in house or carry out. ALL of our ingredients are organic with many sourced locally. The Farm Stand hosts many fun food related events throughout the year. Our grocery store is the heart of our operation and includes the best organic fruit and vegetable selection in Muncie, local pasture raised meats, cheese from 100% grass fed cows, eggs from chickens raised on pasture and fed non-gmo feed, dairy products from 100% grass fed cows, a nice bulk section of commonly used organic dry goods, and all of your organic grocery staples. The egg, avocado, Ezekiel bread, kale, mushrooms, tomatoes, onion, vegan mozzarella cheese & even the kraut. Thank you for providing the community with wholesome, organic local food!

I am really wanting to purchase local organic pork and chicken products. Do you supply these from local farmers? Mainly ground pork, pork steaks, chickens whole or breasts and thighs. If you do what are your prices. Thanks so much.
I have to recommend the coconut rolled dates. I wasn't sure would like it, except it did look yummy. Well, it is.
