Our community suffered a crushing blow today. At 12:54pm, just as we were about to launch a river float, I received a call from The City of Muncie, informing me that the City of Muncie Fire Dept was called to reports of smoke. While on the phone with them, they confirmed there was an active fire in our beloved Osteria32.
Naturally I dropped everything and raced to Muncie. In the 45 minute drive there, all I could think about were our devoted staff and the community we cherish so dearly. I was praying the fire was small and hoping for a best case scenario. I can’t imagine a Tuesday without Kerrigan and Zach and Dustin with Judi and Kevin sitting across from us or Friday nights without the Ratchfords and other delightful couples who choose us for their date nights.
When I arrived, I was grateful to see four walls and a roof and was unsure what I’d see upon entering the building. I thanked God that the firefighters were safe. Once they cleared the structure as safe and stable, they allowed me in to see what we were working with. The fire started in the servers closet (for our regulars, this is the door that I couldn’t wait to paint!) there was some concerning electrical work noted by the inspector and he said it looked like it started in the light fixture then caught everything below it on fire. Thankfully Brandan put in a new doorknob closing that hole and fixed the spring closure device so the door was closed tightly. Because of that, the 1100°+ fire was contained mostly to that room. Firefighters said it was such a powerful inferno that had even the doorknob still been missing, we would have been looking at a hole in the ground.
Thankfully, again, the team had the weekend off to recharge and no one was there because it erupted so fast and strong. Had the gas been on, there’s no telling what would have happened.
There is SIGNIFICANT nasty smoke damage. I just stopped by to check on things and you can smell the fire a block away, even now, 10 hours later. There is also water damage. Also, the entire electrical system will need to be completely redone and brought up to code. We have a lot of work ahead of us but at least we have somewhere to start.
Please keep our staff in your thoughts. Insurance will replace the building but we are a family. They mean the world to me and we are all now facing unexpected time away from work. I don’t know how long it will take insurance to pay everyone for lost time and I REALLY don’t want to lose them to other businesses in town. I’m hoping we can keep it all together long enough to rebuild stronger than ever.
For our wonderful and loyal patrons, we will be back. This is merely a setback. We will be stronger on the other side. I appreciate your support now more than ever. To the Judis and Tammys and Julies and Kevins and Ratchfords out there, we love you all. This is just a little time away but we look forward to reopening and seeing each of you when we do.
To Dustin, Zach, Brandan, Kerrigan, Libby, Kalan, Bryant, Chris, Andrew - thank you all for being the family you’ve been to me and for keeping my head screwed on through this! I look forward to our next chapter.
Thank you again to MFD, to the arson inspector, and to Muncie PD for your help today.
