For the last t-shirt in our first run, we're celebrating America's 250th (with a little nod to Texas: that red, white, and blue color combination has some layers to it 😉). I won't be cooking in this shirt: white doesn't hide grease spatters, hahaha, but America has given me the freedom and mobility to achieve every goal I've had in trying to make a mark in this life. I love it and I love this shirt. And what can I say? My youngest son was born on the Fourth of July!

I got to talk with some folks about Texas barbecue places yesterday and it always puts me in mind of John Mueller Meat Company at the far eastern end of Sixth Street in Austin back in the day.
Getting in line at 10am or so and having John come out of the gate, tip his hat and hand out ice cold Lone Stars to all of us early birds. It was a great place to hang out and the brisket bark was incredible.
RIP John. Thanks for showing all of us how it's done.

I can still remember my very first slices of good brisket in Texas. It was amazing, man. Unlike almost any other state, beef is king in Texas barbecue, and brisket is center stage. When you reference 'Texas' in your brisket, you're linking your stuff to a long line of great cooking, done with oak wood and a simple salt and pepper rub.
This Iron Jacket shirt is all about that link, with one of the original flags of independent Texas on the back. The colors of that flag (and the history it represents) inspired my logo, and I call this the 'Republic of Texas' shirt.
The back looks extra cool when framed with tallow-spattered apron strings. 😁

If you're interested in a simpler barbecue shirt, we've got our "Wood Smoke" tee in tan. I take great pride in doing everything at my shop the old fashioned way: all meats are smoked over a low hardwood fire, all sides are scratch-made by me, and the spirit of a true roadside Texas BBQ joint is preserved to the best of my ability.
This shirt is what it's all about. That and downtown Mulvane. ❤️👊

I'd like to tell the story of each of the new t-shirts this week, starting with the Tomahawk!
The Iron Jacket name is partly inspired by an infamous Comanche war chief who roamed West Texas in the mid-19th century. He wore a suit of Conquistador armor (inherited from some ancestor who had killed one!) and exemplified the bold guerrilla spirit of his Quahadi band. I put the Tomahawk on the front of the shirt as a nod to Chief Iron Jacket himself. On the back is the classic Iron Jacket BBQ logo and a proud rep of my town!

Friends, I wanted to share this story with you because it really gave me a chill.
While I was visiting the Vietnam War "Wall of Faces" online the other day, the random picture I decided to click on for the day turned out to be a Marine killed in 1968 that was from New Mexico. His tribute page indicated that his father had installed a small monument to him in Angel Fire, where they now have a large Vietnam War Memorial.
Knowing that my friend Cali (who shares my business space with me as Huckleberry Baked Goods) was in New Mexico on vacation, I texted her about Lt. Victor Davis Westphall here because I knew she was close by at that time, which seemed like a wild enough coincidence in itself. It turns out she had been to the monument that very day and she sent me the picture of it you see here!
RIP, Lieutenant Westphall. 🇺🇸
