Also to celebrate opening day of the Masters, Struggletown BBQ will be offering “The Augusta” from now through Sunday. This is our grilled pimento cheese and pulled pork sandwich.

Okay everyone...ready to have some fun and take a trip?

This year America will be celebrating our 250th anniversary and Struggletown is joining the celebration.

America 250: 50 States, 50 Sandwiches

To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Struggletown BBQ is launching America 250: 50 States, 50 Sandwiches—a year-long project highlighting one iconic sandwich from each U.S. state, featured weekly for 50 consecutive weeks.

Each week, the restaurant will offer a sandwich that represents the food history, culture, or regional identity of a specific state. From well-known classics to lesser-celebrated regional favorites, the program tells the story of America through what people actually eat!

So, we begin today with Alabama! We will announce the sandwich special tomorrow morning.

We have been kicking around this Struggletown Cares concept for the past couple of years. We wanted to start a foundation to allow us to do more to address food insecurity and give back to the community who has given so much to us. And like most plans in life, it just never seemed to be the right time to start. Next month...next year...etc. If we were looking for a sign that the time had come to start...we got it!

So, here is what went on in the past month:

* We served 127 free sandwiches out of the store to federal workers who were furloughed and SNAP recipients who lost their benefits.

*We provided 53 Thanksgiving meals to individuals and families in need of assistanceWith the help of the Mount Sinai Varsity baseball team, we delivered over $1,800 to the food pantries at Mount Sinai Congregational Church and Trinity Church in Rocky Point.

*We delivered a hot catered lunch to 40 residents at Hope House Ministries in support of their recovery program. We will be delivering two catered meals a month to the residents moving forward.

*We delivered a hot catered lunch to 50 people at Friends Kitchen at the Trinity Church in Rocky Point and will be providing them with a catered meal once a month moving forward.

* We formed a relationship with the ReesSpecht Life Foundation to be a designated collection site for their toy drive that supports local children. (We already filled our first box!)

*We retained a law office who is preparing and filing the paperwork to establish Struggletown Cares, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. This will allow us to operate year-round and fulfill our goals to help fight food insecurity in our communities. We have begun conversations with Mount Sinai High School to establish a Struggletown Cares scholarship to be awarded annually to a graduating senior who plans on pursuing a career in culinary arts.

Not a bad month. And we’ve only just begun!

I can never say this enough. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone in the community who has embraced our business and this movement. Obviously, none of this could happen without the kindness and spirit of giving that can be found in so many of you.
