If you’re in the Mount Shasta area, you have to stop in and visit Bread & Coffee Bar in Dunsmuir.

They opened in May and are already building a really loyal following with their top-notch coffee drinks, fresh breads, and unique, creative pastries.

We’re especially happy to have Northbound on the menu. You can grab an espresso drink made with our Organic American Beauty, or a cup of Organic Mexico Chiapas La Concordia on drip.

More than anything, I really love the community they’re building. Great people, great food, great coffee, and exactly the kind of small local business that makes our area special.

Can’t recommend them enough. Stop by and show them some love! ☕️

You never really know who you’re going to run into around Mount Shasta.

This guy appears to have found a good spot for a cup of coffee.

We left him to it.

11 pounds left.

We’re getting very close to selling out of our second VS Yemen release of the year, and we haven’t even roasted it yet.

This coffee is wild.

It comes from approximately 200 smallholder farmers in the mountains of Eastern Haraz, where coffee has been cultivated on steep stone terraces for centuries. Only about 1,000 pounds of this particular lot were produced.

But what’s especially interesting to us is what happened after the cherries were picked.

Instead of being traditionally dried on individual farms and rooftops, the cherries were brought to a central processing site, fermented for 48–72 hours in sealed tanks, and then slowly sun-dried on raised beds.

The result is one of the strangest and most complex coffees we’ve tasted in a long time.

Plum • Cocoa Nib • Toffee

Those are the three notes we put on the bag, but they barely tell the story.

We also tasted rosemary, banana bread, watermelon candy, fig, blackberry, fennel, orange blossom, rose petal, sweet tea and more. The coffee seems to change every few minutes as it cools.

Yemen was one of the first coffee origins I fell in love with more than 26 years ago, and coffees like this remind me why.

We’re roasting this one time, Wednesday, September 2.

11 pounds remain. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

The world is a little darker today without the shining beacon that was Dolly Parton.

She was truly one of a kind, with a heart of gold and the voice of an angel. To me, she represented the very best of Appalachia: warmth, humor, generosity, humility, resilience, and an incredible pride in where she came from.

I grew up in Virginia, and Dolly was part of the soundtrack of our house for as long as I can remember. My parents admired her deeply and, in their own way, considered her “one of us.” Poor folks from meager beginnings who understood what it meant to come from very little and never forget where you came from.

She never seemed ashamed of any part of her story. She celebrated it. And somehow, no matter how famous she became, she still felt like she belonged to all of us.

Stormy finishing up a batch of Spoonbender.

She pulls the trier to draw a sample from inside the roaster, watching closely to see if the coffee has reached its full development. When it’s ready, she opens the cast iron door and drops the finished batch into the cooling tray.

All roasted on our 70-year-old Probat coffee roaster here in Mount Shasta.

Spoonbender is our darkest roast and one of our flagship coffees. It’s not as dark as some folks like and too dark for others, but after all these years, it remains one of our most popular coffees.

Sweet, rich, and full-bodied without too much bitterness. It tastes great black, but it’s also made for a splash of your favorite milk.

Mount Shasta is gorgeous from every angle, but seeing it from the sky is something else.

This incredible shot comes from local paraglider Nate Scott, founder of Apogee Paragliding. Nate has been flying since 1999 and spends his summers high above our mountain, teaching, guiding tandem flights and sharing a pretty extraordinary view of the place we call home.

And when Nate isn’t fueled by wind and thermals, he’s exclusively fueled by Northbound Coffee. His favorites are our medium roasts: Mainline, Lamplighter and American Beauty.

Thanks for the view, Nate. We’ll keep the coffee coming.

It’s a hot one today at the roastery.

Our co-founder and head roaster, Jen, is running our 70-year-old Probat doing what she loves. Every bag of Northbound starts right here, one small batch at a time.
