A Statement from the Solano Family
to our beloved community and cherished patrons,
 
One special day in 1979, Ray and Jan Retez opened The Whole Enchilada, and our beloved harbor town would never be the same. For more than 45 years, this family-owned institution has served generations of customers with passion, warmth and sincere hospitality.
In the true spirit of the restaurant’s name, Ray and Jan gave “absolutely everything” to the business, the community of Moss Landing and to our family that continues to honor an enduring legacy.
Ray and Jan’s wild and tender dream played out each day at the renowned roadside eatery that was frequented by locals, and dog-eared in countless tourist guides. With Ray’s charismatic presence behind the bar and Jan’s magic in the restaurant, they created more than a restaurant. They built a landmark. A home away from home for many. Wednesday, Jan. 31 officially marks the end of an era. Following our beloved Ray’s passing in November, the family will now close a chapter in a local story that has brought joy to a steady stream of satisfied customers.
On behalf of the Solano family, and spanning generations at The Whole Enchilada, we extend our deepest and most sincere gratitude for all those remarkable years. It has been a joy and an honor to serve the vibrant Monterey Bay community, growing alongside it, learning from it, and being an integral part of its rich tapestry. We stand today, immensely proud and grateful. Our family’s journey has been more than just about serving delicious food; it’s been about contributing to numerous causes that resonate with us and within the heart of our community. The support and respect everyone has shown since Ray’s death has been incredibly touching, and it’s a beautiful tribute to a dream that came true.
We are humbled as we remember and honor this legacy, and move forward with Kim, Luis and Sofia remaining as the heartbeat of The Haute Enchilada. They carry the torch with the same passion, dedication, and love that Ray and Jan showed for decades. (Continues in comments👇🏽)
